![]() What this double live, twenty-two, track album shows is that BLIND GUARDIAN can cut it live. No problems. No excuses. Stripped of all the studio trickery and over processed nonsense that accompanied "A Night At The Opera" - a disappointment to these ears - "Live 2003" is quite simply an audio delight of the highest quality.
Ostensibly recorded on the European leg of the 2002/ 2003 World Tour the set consists of a plethora of GUARDIAN classics both old and new. And to be honest the three tracks plucked from "A Night At The Opera", "The Soulforged", "Under The Ice" and "Punishment Divine" translate so much better to the live arena than on CD.
As the saying goes no substitute for class and for the many followers of the German Metal giants this live showcase will only strengthen the resolve and commitment of the GUARDIAN fans and consolidate the bands position as one of the finest Power Metal groups out there.
Opening with and not surprisingly the "War Of Wrath" and "Into The Storm" from the excellent "Nightfall In Middle Earth" vocalist Hansi K�rsch and co. run a gauntlet of fast paced Speed Metal, emotive ballads and fine, fine Heavy Metal music.
Powerhouse Metal tracks like "Welcome To Dying", "A Script For My Requiem", the awesome "Valhalla" and "Born In A Mourning Hall" are juxtaposed against the soft lull of "Harvest Of Sorrow", "A Past And Future Secret" and the enchanting "The Bard's Song".
Relying heavily on the last three studio releases "Imaginations From The Other Side", "Nightfall In Middle Earth" and "A Night At The Opera" which make up the bulk of both CDs the pre 1999 BLIND GUARDIAN is not forgotten and such gems as "Majesty", "Journey Through The Dark" and "Lord Of The Rings" keeps the legacy of the band intact for newcomers.
BLIND GUARDIAN'S particular brand of driving, technical, complicated Power Metal may not be to every ones liking but the skill and mastery displayed by the band on their chosen instruments is at times simply breath taking and a real joy to listen to. A cracking live release that should interest any fan of true Heavy Metal. |
