    Spineshank Discography

    Spineshank - Strictly Diesel (1998)

    Quote:
By combining the barely containable fury of Korn and the Deftones with the artful progressiveness of Tool, Spineshank should have no problem attracting the aforementioned band's audiences with their debut release, Strictly Diesel. Singer Johnny Santos is a disciple of the talk/scream/sing style that many metal bands of the late '90s use, while the musicians have no problem creating loopy, elastic rock. But Spineshank isn't a direct ripoff of their influences; it's hard to think of any band today that would have had the guts to redo the Beatles' classic "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as a distorted, heavy dirge. The lyrics for their original songs usually reflect how hardships in their lives had made them stronger, as in the track "Where We Fall," while electronics seep into the music throughout (thanks to programmer Josh Abraham, who's worked previously with Limp Bizkit and Orgy). Fans of angst metal will have no problem latching onto such tracks as "Intake," "Stovebox," "28," and the title track.

Spineshank - The Height of Callousness (2000)
    [ENHANCED REISSUE]

    Quote:

From the midst of the swelling angst, anger, and rage of 20th century music, comes Spineshank, the agro-metal band from Los Angeles. Spineshank's 2001 release, The Height of Callousness, is a super-charged silver bullet of 11 aggressive tracks that will get your blood flowing as if you're engaged in a stock car race gone haywire. Each of the turbo-boost tracks on this album is chock full with a cause or reasons to get fired up about. On the scream-filled track "Asthmatic," a breath-taking tune on which singer Jonny Santos croons, "I never needed your help/I never wanted your help," the band solidifies their views on the polar forces of fear and inner strength while drawing a cynical picture of today's independent, emotionally hardened youth. The furious "Asthmatic" subconsciously melts into the second (and title) track, "The Height of Callousness," an even angrier tune. The listener is swept into a drum-induced fury of piled up, pent up aggression and frustration; and, as if mosh pits weren't dangerous enough, Spineshank's music is certain to take things to an even higher level. Society and humanity are the subject of investigation and scrutiny when Santos sings about how he is "trying to understand/someone like you can sleep at night" on the terse track, "Play God." You have to wonder what he is so angry about when he says, "everything you taught me/gave me immunity to your disease," and defies succumbing to this defiled existence he speaks of. The industrial sound on "New Disease" is reminiscent of shock rocker Marilyn Manson, and Spineshank's powerdrill potency is as disturbing as bands like Pantera and Sepultura. The Height of Callousness is a mix of heavy metal and industrial sounds, sprinkled with pinches of spite and paranoia for societal power and the drowning whirlpools of self-doubt. After all, The Height of Callousness is a lot to swallow, but so is truth; Spineshank's version is just a little rougher going down, so be sure to use a chaser.

    Spineshank - Self-Destructive Pattern (2003)

    Image
    Quote:

Spineshank are the band that are on the tip of everyone's tongue. It always seems that they are inches away from a massive breakthrough and reaching a level of success that their peers have achieved much quicker. Their debut was a raw, heavy album that fused melody with blistering metal, and the follow-up, 2000's 'The Height Of Callousness' took what was already there and bulked up their sound with the use of electronics. 'Self-Destructive Pattern' is the culmination of those two albums. Both sides of the coin are presented here and Spineshank have turned out not only their heaviest, but their catchiest album to date. Songs like "Violent Mood Swings" and "Dead To Me" will kick you around the room until they finish, well "Smothered" and "Beginning Of The End" have Spineshank showing a softer & catchier, yet unrestrained style. The pinnacle of this album to me is the slow-burning "Stillborn," which is the perfect fusion of metal and electronica. Other standouts include: "Consumed," "Slavery," and "Forgotten." I definitely recommend that if you like any kind of heavy music, you pick this up. Spineshank are experts at what they do. They know how to bob your head without snapping it off and they are just now reaching full maturity.

    1. Violent Mood Swings
    2. Slavery
    3. Smothered
    4. Consumed (Obsessive Compulsive)
    5. Beginning Of The End
    6. Forgotten

    8. Tear Me Down
    9. Stillborn
    10. Falls Apart
    11. Fallback
    12. Dead To Me
