Description: Ira Levin's 1972 novel about forced conformity in a small Connecticut town made for this compelling 1975 thriller. Katharine Ross stars as a city woman who moves with her husband to Stepford and is startled by how perpetually happy many of the local women seem to be. Her search for an answer reveals a plot to replace troublesome real wives with more accommodating fake ones (not unlike the alien takeover in Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and director Bryan Forbes (King Rat) made this a taut, tense semi-classic with a healthy dose of satiric wit.
The original 1975 version of The Stepford Wives taps right into the elitist core of the 1970's version of the American dream by offering a suburb of old-fashioned splendor and futuristic perfection. Yet we are told that it is not servants nor technology that support this retreat for the successful, but the wives.
Happy, smiling, lovely, sexually available and thoroughly undemanding wives. Their chains might be invisible, but they might as well be singing �Zippity-Doo-Dah.�
In short, this isn�t simply a male-centric society, but a realm of master and slave where the upper caste�s satisfaction rests on the complete dehumanization of the lower. What we find out about the true nature of The Stepford Wives isn�t just some horror-show shock, but a representation of what we do to everyone whose social role is defined as 100% subservient.
