Stephen Fry's American travelogue is directed by Michael Palin's usual collaborator and has the same easy-going, amiable air about it as Palin's series do. Fry's plan is to visit every state in the Union, driving his own London taxi and scattering bons mots along the way. There's an element of QI - the Road Trip about it: in this first episode of six, which covers New England, Fry goes deer-hunting (looking hilarious in the outfit) and lobster-fishing and passes on titbits such as how to put a lobster into a trance or the fact that deer always run into the wind. Although it's a little patchy, there are more than enough sparkling moments to enjoy, as when our hero meets a bunch of "goodfellas" in a Queens social club or deals blackjack in Atlantic City. And you have to love Fry's black, gay, Republican, Baptist academic friend, Professor Peter Gomes of Harvard University, who is worth the price of admission alone.

There's a sublime moment of quintessential Stephen Fry-ness when our genial travel guide embarks on a surrealist ramble during a bourbon tasting session. A clearly tipsy Fry, enthused by alcohol and joie de vivre, lets his tongue run away as he sniffs the potent brew, much to the polite bemusement of his host. "This smell is an autumnal walk in the countryside, probably about seven miles from Aldershot on the fringe of an old wood, a spinney, or a copse . . . there's a slightly wet labrador panting . . ." and so it goes until Fry admits, "I think Stevie should have a little lie down" before he lurches off. It's a sweet interlude in an exhausting trip as Fry whizzes through the South, visiting a coal mine in West Virginia and a "body farm" (CSI and Patricia Cornwell fans will know all about those), where forensic anthropologists study human decomposition. In lesser hands, this could be maudlin, but with Fry in charge it's thoughtful and touching.

Stephen Fry's broken right arm is in a sling as we start the latest leg of his journey following the mighty Mississippi, though presumably the episode was filmed out of sequence, as in some bits he's perfectly able-bodied. Ten painful pins are holding the shattered bones together, but Fry doesn't seem downcast as he potters around New Orleans, meeting a voodoo high priestess at Mardi Gras, before he heads to the notorious Angola State Penitentiary, where 90 per cent of the prisoners expect never to be freed. It's a thoroughly absorbing journey, and even if most of the states disappear in a flash of scenery through the window of Fry's taxi, he's such a wonderful, lucid and funny guide, it doesn't matter.

Some people have been sniffy about Stephen Fry in America, which is baffling - it's an hour with Stephen Fry. That's Stephen. Fry. Who else would anyone wish to spend quality time with? All right, so it's possibly a bit rushed as he belts in his black cab through all of the American States, but there's plenty to learn along the way. He's funny too, so what's not to like? Fry doesn't just drop in on the tourist traps, though he does pay a visit to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, that bizarre man-made monument to four US presidents, which he thinks is a "bit silly". This is an altogether more thoughtful travelogue than the usual as Fry stops off at Wounded Knee, site of the massacre of 300 American Indians, and a disused missile silo that's now home to a family of charming hippies. He even does a bit of shopping, in a ridiculously butch store devoted to truckers.

"That's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!" gasps Stephen Fry. Is he looking at the Grand Canyon? No. He's gazing at a fancy electron microscope in the Los Alamos National Laboratory - a place rarely on your average tourist's itinerary. But then you'd never call Fry "average" and an hour in his erudite company, whether he's visiting one of the Wonders of the World, a Mormon calendar shoot or doing nothing at all, is to be savoured. This week he's zipping through the "real West", enjoying himself hugely as he's initiated into the intricacies of brothel life and takes part in a gunfight.

No-one but the charming Stephen Fry would respond to the thrill of firing a "Dirty Harry" .44 Magnum by exclaiming "Oooh . . . hot!" followed by "Mummy!" and "Holy mackerel!" But then it's his combination of urbanity, intelligence and childlike wonder that makes him such a wonderful travelling companion. He's on the last leg of his journey around America and so is travelling north up the Pacific coast from San Francisco to, ultimately, Alaska and then back down to Hawaii. Sailing around Kodiak Island, he lands an extraordinarily ugly fish that looks like one of those Doctor Who Sea Devils; and in Hawaii (displaying an alarming taste in fl oral shorts) he swims with sharks. Well, to be more accurate, he bobs with them in a courageous but less than athletic manner.
