Luke Vibert / Wagon Christ / Plug Discography (Up 03/1/09)

PLUG - DRUM 'N' BASS FOR PAPA - BLUE PLANET 1996

    Image

    Quote:
Drum 'N' Bass for Papa is one of the great elder albums of drum'n'bass. Plug, aka Luke Vibert, twists so many strange, tweaked out sounds into his cosmic stew that the album takes on a life of its own from the word go. The chief difference in this import version over the Nothing-released domestic version is that the import includes the monumental "The Life of the Mind." The song wasn't included on the domestic version due to problems with sample clearance. Fans of the Coen brothers don't know what they're missing. "Life of the Mind" is a sinister, even wicked, ride. Sampling John Goodman's scream-fest freakout in Barton Fink, the song is a true delight. The title song is the other standout track. Vibert blends throbbing basslines with warp speed breakbeats, creating perhaps the crowning achievement of the genre. The album presents one decadent pleasure after the next. Though the domestic release includes the earlier EP releases as a bonus disc, the import version of the album is the one to track down. Who would have thought that one song would ever make such a difference on an album? Drum 'N' Bass for Papa is an amazing album, and this import is the preferred version, as it hasn't been excised of its demonic underbelly.

LUKE VIBERT - BIG SOUP - UNIVERSAL MUSIC 1997

    Image

    Quote:
This is one kicking album. Hip-hop and electronics are merged on a number of groovy tracks. The spacey samples set just the right atmosphere. Deep bass and heavy beats are combined with a DJs intuition. I like the latter half of the album the best but the entire LP grew on me after a couple of listens. Stretched out vocal hooks and jazzy drum and bass fuse to make No Turn Unstoned one of the more addictive tracks. Ring-modulated samples add an amusing twist. Am I Still Dreaming features samples of an annoying kids voice manipulated to match the infectious beat...

WAGON CHRIST - TALLY HO! - VIRGIN RECORDS 1998

    Image

    Quote:
Luke Vibert, AKA Wagon Christ, doesn't strive to be a prophet of the electronic age ala DJ Spooky, nor does he aim for the pop crossover appeal of the Chemical Brothers. Rather, he quietly but determinedly pursues his own reconstructionistvision using the tools of modern DJ culture as his buildingblocks and fashioning a personal--but very accessible--sonic world. Vibert builds that world by drawing on ambient music, Phillip Glass-style minimalism, the occasional trip-hop beat, world music, and an airy, ethereal quality that's uniquely his. While much of TALLY HO! is eminently danceable, it's much more than just a party record. Vibert fashions shimmering electronic soundscapes remarkable for their vibrancy and warmth, and under the right circumstances, listeners may be uplifted by TALLY HO!'s consistently positive vibe.

LUKE VIBERT & B.J. COLE - STOP THE PANIC - COOKING VINYL 2000

    Image

    Quote:
Pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole does make a bizarre foil for Luke Vibert (or is it the other way around?), and the strangeness of this collaboration is reflected here in the music. Vibert certainly has his trip-hop hat on here (his drum-and-bass forays are noticeably unplugged), but that doesn't mean he's forsaken the many styles he messes with--eclecticismis the name of the game on STOP THE PANIC.
Ergo, there'sthe jazzy bloopfest of "This Stuff is Fresh", the faux big-beat of "Dischordzilla", and the synthetic luau-funk of "FlyHawaii". Cole expertly dances around Vibert's warped rhythms and oddball sounds, contributing plucked refrains of pedalsteel and sitar, especially on the dizzy "Cheng Phooey", where Vibert lays down a nicely loopy beatbox riff and interstellar electronic blips under Cole's prickly strings.

WAGON CHRIST - MUSIPAL - NINJA TUNE 2001

    Image

    Quote:
Luke Vibert is a man of many faces. In the last 10 years, he's released umpteen records under a variety of pseudonyms. He's made hip-hop as Luke Vibert, jungle as Plug and bizarre left-field breaks as Wagon Christ. Surprisingly Musipal, Vibert's 2001 excursion (as Wagon Christ, no less) is his first for more than two years. A cunning switch of labels aside (he's jumped from Virgin to Ninja Tune), it seems that little has changed in the world of the bearded Cornish beatfreak. He still fluctuates between funky, acid-tinged breaks and crazy, instrumental hip-hop. And yes, there are still more stupid samples and quirky melodies than your average "hilarious" Kid Koala record. It's all enjoyable stuff (it's refreshing to hear someone jump between genres so successfully), but Musipal is hardly a departure from his usual fare.

LUKE VIBERT - YOSEPH - WARP RECORDS 2003

    Image

    Quote:
YosepH, Luke Vibert's debut album for Warp, on single CD or loud cut triple vinyl, is an addictive batch of fresh acid, wrought with much love from a collection of vintage analogue synths and polished with the meticulous Vibert production glow and pHat bottom end.

WAGON CHRIST - SORRY I MAKE YOU LUSH - NINJA TUNE 2004

    Image

    Quote:
The child who is heard glumly complaining that he wants to put on some music in the opening of Sorry I Make You Lush will have trouble getting through Wagon Christ's album, as will anyone else who is expecting the niceties of conventional choruses or melodies. But when one realises that Wagon Christ is yet another alias for the guru-like Luke Vibert, you know not to expect these things. Even coming from Ninja Tune, a label famed for its electronic eclecticism, this one still sticks out as being left-field. All the usual Vibert staples are here: fresh beats, a mix of squelchy analogue and digital sounds, speech samples. But rather than Mr Scruff-style light-hearted funky dance, the impetus here is on creating a firm groove. The songs range from some credible hip hop-style funk on "Kwikwidetrax" (complete with totally incongruous children's voices), to spacey atmospherics on the opening "Saddic Gladdic". The best is saved until last with what can only be described as a cross between updated Motown and Cornelius. The basslines are supple, the production is suitably spacey and atmospheric, and though some cuts may drag on slightly too long ("Sci-Fi Staircase" being the worst offender), they are all refreshingly funky and danceable.

    KERRIER DISTRICT - 1 - REPHLEX 2004

    Image

    Quote:
uke Vibert pulls out the cheeky titles and grooved up disco vibes for his latest long player on Rephlex. Coming a few months after his Yoseph debut album for Warp, Kerrier District finds Luke in vibrant form, 10 tracks complete with bubbling basslines, subtle and sweet vocal samples and some classic analog action. Named after a district in Cornwall where Luke and pals grew up he parodies the Metro Area explosion by delivering an album of original disco classics for the 21st century. Opening with Lets Dance And Freak a vocal spaced out disco number with vintage party time samples and pogo-ing disco tom drums Luke fetches the track up to date with his monstrous 303 bassline that cements the track as a killer. With all manner of samples and noises appearing it continues in classic Vibert form, content, groove and a damn good understanding of Disco is the perfect combination. Illogan heads straight for the Dan Hartman (Take That?) school of disco with its Relight My Fire melody stabbing away, but Luke keeps it deep with a swooping funk bassline and wah wah guitar samples running in sync. On to New York which is just rampant hedonistic action from Luke as he visits the Big Apple with his 70s synths and finger clicking drums, delving into a feelgood mood for the spaced out strings and horn like chord stabs that deliver an ace groove. Disco Bus is a perfect chick tune, ass shuffling bass joins the padding 4/4 with vibes echoing around the beat, a cheesy sounding piano stabbing out a brilliant psuedo Italo melody and the fundamental vocal snippets that add the vintage feel, brilliant stuff. A class album from Vibert that shows as with every other genre hes touched he can pull it off and here he evokes a classic era and fetches it right up to date. Killer.

LUKE VIBERT - CHICAGO, DETROIT, REDRUTH - PLANET MU RECORDS 2007

    Image

    Quote:
Luke Vibert's second album on Planet Mu brings together many strands of his work: Drum and Bass ("ComfyCozy" recalling past glories as Plug); Trip-Hop ("Rotting Flesh Bags" being his finest Wagon Christ type track in years); Breaks ("Breakbeat Metal Music" the possessor of a Speak and Spell lyric of coaxing danceability) and Acid ("Argument Fly" must be the most straight-ahead acid track so far released by monsieur Vibert, reminiscent of F.U.S.E or early 808 State...) The album hangs together with the strands of acid, breakbeats, techno and disco at its heart; the reassuring hand of an old master triumphs again.

    VIBERT & SIMMONDS - RODULATE - REPHLEX 2008

    Image

    Quote:
The first Vibert/Simmonds collaboration appeared on Rephlex almost exactly 15 years ago, and featured Luke Vibert hooked up with fellow Cornish dweller Jeremy Simmonds for a sequence of rugged, experimental and incredibly warm tracks that to this day we have a real soft spot for. "Rodulate" features more archive material from the pair, chosen and honed by them for a second collection of electronic music variations that touch on stripped electro, sino textures, Acid reductions and even some squashed rhymes for your listening pleasure. It's a raw, beautifully analogue affair that manages to temper some of Vibert's more overtly kitsch instincts without getting rid of his effortless funk and sci-fi styles. Simmonds' involvement somehow turns the whole thing into an edgier, more robust beast, offering a good counterpoint to some of the more polished Vibert productions of later years. "Hurtin' Cyst" in particular harks back to the wonderful 'Phat Lab Nightmare' - one of his earliest and most overlooked albums under the Wagon Christ moniker, while the title track is a rough dose of distorted, weirdy electro of the very finest kind. Really good stuff - Highly recommended.
