    Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan

    Image

    BeerBook Description:
Developed over many centuries, Tai Chi Chuan is one of the treasures of Chinese culture, incorporating the principles of Taoist philosophy with the accumulated knowledge of the traditional martial arts. Wu Style is known as the "three-in-one exercise," invigorating the mind, the internal energy (qi), and the body. At all times the practitioner focuses on using mental strength, not raw force. With the mind, one directs the qi, and with the qi, one directs the whole body. Continuous round movements are made without ever breaking or interrupting the flow of internal energy.

Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan describes the origin and philosophy of Tai Chi Chuan, and then details its multiple health benefits. Step-by-step instruction in the practice of the Tai Chi Chuan solo form (including many photographs) is presented, followed by a chapter describing the two-person exercise known as
Push Hands, for which the Wu Style is famous.

Wu Style of Tai Chi Chuan

    Image

Wu-style Tai Chi Chuan was created by Quan You (1834-1902) who lived at Daxing in Hebei Pro-vince (now under Beijing Municipality). Quan You was of the Manchu nationality of China. He learned Tai Chi Quan from Yang Luchan and later followed Yang's second son Yang Banhou to study the short program. Quan You was known for his ability to soften his movements. Quan's son Jianquan changed his family name to Wu as he was brought up as a Han national. Wu Jianquan (1870-1942) inherited and disseminated a style of Tai Chi which is comfortable and upright. His style is continuous and ingenious and because his routine does not require jumps and leaps, it spread far and wide among common people. Since this style of Tai Chi Quan was disseminated by the Wu family, it became known as the Wu-style Tai Chi Chuan. The Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan was known by the name "Zhong Jia" ("medium frame").

Taoist Ways To Transform Stress Into Vitality

    Image

This book guides you through few basic, simple and effective Taoist practices for transforming negative energy into positive; removing the the obstacles in your energy field. More advanced practice of transmutation of negative energy is covered in the book Fusion of the Five Elements, however before you'd work with that one, you'd have to learn Microcosmic Orbit first.

The first practice is called "inner smile". In essence this involves focusing upon the smiling, happy, energy and directing it to different parts of your body. As you relax your mind, emotions and body into this smiling energy, any stress and tension you may feel is bound to be released.

The next set of practices covered in this book are six healing sounds. In Taoist tradition, specific emotions are associated with different organs in your body and so are different sounds which help to clear any energetic obstacles in these organs. Sounds, and accompaning movements are designed to clear and balance the energy of the particular organ. Working with healing sounds also involves focusing upon the imagery (in the simplest form a color) associated with the particular organ.

Five healing sounds are associated with organs in the body - heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and spleen. Sixty healing sound is associated not with the organ, but with the triple warmed meridian. Working with this sixth sound will deeply relax you and if you suffer from insomnia, it may also help you to fall asleep.

Training Methods of 72 Arts of Shaolin

    Image

    Book Description
The book "Training Methods of 72 Arts of Shaolin" by Jin Jing Zhong is devoted to the most enigmatic and little-known aspect of training of Shaolin monks. The book was written in 1934 with blessing and direct participation of the Head of the Shaolin Monastery Reverend Miao Xing nicknamed "The Golden Arhat", one of the best Shaolin fighters of all times. For the first time the book describes full training methods in all 72 Shaolin Arts. Being until recently for outsiders the most secret part of training of Shaolin monks, which made them invulnerable in fight, 72 Shaolin Arts at the present time become available to all who are ready to practice them persistently and with an open heart. Training methods described in the book allow to develop supernatural abilities, far beyond abilities of an ordinary man. The book has been translated from the Chinese language for the first time.

    From the Publisher
The 72 Shaolin Arts are methods of preparing the body and the mind for action under extreme conditions (first of all, in conditions of real-life hand-to-hand combat). If you train only hand-to-hand techniques and do not pay attention to special training, you will never achieve the highest mastery and your movements will lack the real force. "The fists are like flowers, and the legs like embroidery needles", laugh the old masters at such "techniques". The 72 Arts of Shaolin are the foundation of the utmost mastery in all styles of Kung Fu.

72 types of the Shaolin Arts represent an example of personal experience of monks from the Shaolin Monastery in the Songshan Mountains. This experience was obtained by hard exercises in combat arts during many epochs. Many hundreds of monks gained outstanding results and brought fame to Martial Arts of Shaolin for ever. All of them attained such unusual abilities thanks to special secret practices traditionally called "72 Arts of Shaolin". They are the base and essence of the Shaolin Combat Training.

Chronicles of the Shaolin Monastery (Shaolin Si Zhi) preserved for us many names of monks-warriors from Shaolin who attained mystic heights of mastery and obtained superhuman abilities thanks to indefatigable training and diligent observance of true methods.

For instance, monk Hong Wen who lived in the XIII-th century sat into the stance MA, put a stone slab weighing 50 kg on his head, stood a man on each knee and stayed so until a huge incense candle, as high as a man, half burned off. His disciple Jue Yuan could dodge several spears thrown at him, broke stone slabs with his fist, knocked a hollow in a wall with his finger, ground pebbles into powder in his palms, handled all kinds of Shaolin weapons with skill.

Monk Zhi Yin who lived in the XV-th century came to Shaolin at the age of sixteen. He gained such a mastery that he could easily move a stone weighing 500 kg with a push of his leg, break trees with kick, drive piles into ground with his heel, knock down several people at once with a kick.

Monk Shu Ran who lived in the XVII-th century perfectly mastered the art of "Light Body" QING GONG, jumped out of one pit into another, could jump up a wall or a high pole, and for it he was nicknamed "Genuine Master of Gong Fu". His contemporary, monk Shu Qing mastered the art of "Diamond Finger" to perfection, with his finger he could pierce a wooden board as it were a straw mat and crush stones into sand with blows of his elbows.

The XIX-th century also knew a lot of true masters. Monk Ji *** gained outstanding success in exercises for hardness YING GONG. He crushed huge stones with his elbow like with a diamond pestle and broke thick wooden beams with an arm blow. Besides, he was proficient in the art of "Golden Bell", blows of a big iron hammer did not hurt him at all.

Monk Hai Fa beat off arrows shot at him, was able of dodging spears pointed at him from a few sides. Besides, he mastered the method "A Leg Weighing 1000 Jins", he could crush a stone with a "trampling" blow and kill a man with the "Iron Fist".

Monk Zhen Yue ran up a sheer wall of three meters high and mastered the art of "Light Steps". His disciple Ru Bi achieved some success in "Hard Art" YING GONG and additionally he perceived the "Luohan's Art" LUOHAN GONG and could fight against several armed enemies in pitch darkness.

Iron Thread (Tiet Sin Kuen) by Lam Sai Wing

    Image

This e-book comprises English translation of the book "Iron Thread (Tiet Sin Kuen)" written by outstanding Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu grand master of the previous century, Lam Sai Wing, and detailed comment composed by Alexander Popov, the Hung Gar Kung Fu master with over 20 years experience. In his book "Iron Thread (Tiet Sin Kuen)", Lam Sai Wing for the first time revealed the secret method of Hung gar Kung Fu fighter preparation based on Hard Qigong (or Chi Kung). The method of Tiet Sin Qigong makes muscles, sinews and bones stronger. Thus a weak person becomes much more powerful and enduring. Internal organs get stronger as well and it allows you to prolong your life and resist lots of diseases. As Lam Sai Wing wrote, he had no possibility to describe in full every Tao Lu. That is why many intermediate pictures as well as images for opposite side work were missed in the book. This disadvantage complicates the study of Tao Lu. Those who want to master the Tiet Sin Qigong method on ones own, can use the detailed commentaries to each Tao Lu written by one of the leading Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu specialists in the world, Alexander Popov.

    Throws for Strikers

    Image

This book is rather short, a mere 96 pages, but covers a very important and often underutilized aspect of the striking arts--throws. After all, as my judo instructor used to say, the concrete can (and often does) hit harder than the fist. In addition to covering the most common types of throwing techniques, Abernethy discusses fundamental principles that apply to all successful throws, provides some good practice drills to help solidify your knowledge, and even explains what to do should a throw go wrong and you end up on the ground. This isn't just dojo stuff, but rather fundamental information you can use on the street for self defense.

Contents include: The use of throws in the striking arts, theory and practice, sweeps, hip throws, cross-buttocks throw, shoulder throw, neck throw, double-leg-lift throw, outer-reaping throw, inner-reaping throw, winding throw, tackle, shoulder-wheel throw, what if it all goes wrong, and some examples of throws found in kata (forms).

Clear writing and great pictures make this a valuable and useful tome for practitioners of karate, boxing, tae kwon do, and other striking arts.

The Throws and Takedowns of Greco-roman Wrestling

    Image

This is only the second book I've been able to find on Greco-Roman wrestling, and while it's pretty good, it's nowhere near the level of William Martell's text. British karateka-turned-bouncer-turned-pioneer Geoff Thompson presents basic Greco-Roman stance, grips, and throws. The basics are covered in a single chapter, then each throw he presents (ten, with some minor variations) is given a chapter all it's own, with between two and ten pages (including photos). I find it disappointing that he doesn't cover any of the underlying principles for these throws, as each throw DOES follow certain principles that are almost unique to Greco. With all that said, the black & white photos are quite clear, which is a plus; the text itself is well-written; and Mr. Thompson always keeps the techniques in context of what he's trying to demonstrate: workable moves for street defense. Overall, I've gotta confess that I find the book unextrordinary, but it's decent enough for those with no access to Greco-Roman wrestling throws, which are among the most devistating in the martial arts.

The Secret of KI-End of Injury

    Image

The techniques found in this book come primarily from martial art techniques and many people are prejudiced against
martial arts because in America the martial arts do not have the excellent and respected reputation they do in the Orient.
The reason due to the fact that many people in America profess themselves to be better than they are and they have too little
knowledge and too poor of technique but are going around telling everyone that they are the greatest. Only one person can
be the greatest. So they usually find themselves in compromising situations such as breaking their hands trying to break
bricks, or getting punched out by a girl. But this does not mean that the techniques and the art form that they have learned
are not effective. It only means that they are not effective in using them. A gun will certainly kill you, but first you have to
hit the person with the bullet. So martial art techniques are definitely effective but first the person doing them must be able
to hit the target with the right technique.

    The Fence--The Art of Protection

    Image

The Premise In this book we are working on the premise that, if a street confrontation occurs, you have already exhausted all other options, i.e. avoidance, escape, verbal dissuasion, loopholing and posturing. Most self-defence situations and attack scenarios issue rays of prior warning, if you are perceptive enough to spot the attackers ritual. If you are foolhardy enough to heighten your vulnerability by placing yourself in a dangerous situation (walking down a dark alley at night etc) you cannot expect any prior warning and will have to make the best of a bad situation. You then fall into the ambush attack scenario. Most people in society are so switched off, both mentally and environmentally, that many attack scenarios fall into this category. If this is the case and it so often is then you will be fighting tooth and nail for your very existence. The majority will not survive the ambush attack purely because they have never trained for it. Previously I talked about the verbal communication that often precedes an attack upon the person and the victim who is quite often disarmed or shocked rigid by it, The time lapse between the disarming, or scarifying verbal (which can be very short) and the attack itself is your time. During these seconds you may seize the moment, as it were, and be pre-emptive, effecting attack or/and escape. Alternatively you can elongate the verbal by replying to the aforementioned dialogue with submissive or aggressive counter-verbal. These seconds before battle are absolutely pivotal. They must be managed quickly and without demur; remember, hesitancy begets defeat. This arena is that of the 3 second fighter. When the police talk about self-protection the key word is target hardening that is, making yourself a hard target by means of placement and awareness of environment and the enemy. When I talk about the physical aspect of self-protection I am always working on the premise that, for whatever reason, a situation has gone beyond this and reached dire straits and the possibility of escape is no longer an option.

    The Fat Burning Bible

    Image

    Amazon.com
Ideally, being healthy isn't just about being a certain weight: It's about having all the systems of your body performing at optimum levels for as long a time as possible. Mackie Shilstone, in his role as medical advisor to professional athletes, presents a complex plan in The Fat-Burning Bible that incorporates supplements, sleep and stress management alongside the standards of diet and exercise.

The first section of the book helps you establish your honest starting point--it's easy to be at an acceptable weight but have unacceptably high fat percentages, cholesterol or blood sugar. Establishing this point involves a fair amount of measuring and math, and includes checklists that will help you identity potential concerns like Syndrome X or thyroid problems.

Diet and nutrition follow; the section encompasses fairly complex suggestions on intake percentages as well as simple meal plans and recipes. Portion control figures highly--it's back to the old 'four ounces of skinless chicken ***' as a basic building block. A short section on supplements refers in a general way to recent research, but is more of an introduction than complete system. More time is devoted to the exercise program, but this could be more complex than a typical dieter feels ready for. Clear photos show off specific exercises, but they require regular trips to the gym or a set of dumbbells at home. The last section, which Shilstone suggests photocopying, is a day-to-day journal that allows you to check off goals and note areas for further work. It's a helpful tool, but also requires a fair amount of dedication.

Ultimately, this book seems designed for those who are already fairly fit, but are hoping to achieve a more ideal version of good health. It could be especially helpful for amateur athletes--if you're prepping for a marathon or other big event, this might be just the tool you need. The Essence of Tai Chi Chi Kung: Health and Martial Arts

    Image

This book provides what so many books touch on, but never really go in-depth into. It provides a detailed viewpoint of the medical side of the martial arts from an Eastern viewpoint.

It talks about where Chi is generated, the medical benefits of stimulating Chi, uses, practice and so much more! The entire book is filled with page after page of knowledge. I have used this book to fill the holes in other books I've collected. I would highly recommend this book. It is very informative!

Ground Fighting: Pins - the Bedrock

    Image

Ground Fighting is one of the most underestimated and yet devastatingly ferocious of all the Martial Arts. 95% of all street fights that are not finished within the first 3 seconds end up on the floor. Are you prepared? This series of books prepares you with the very best of Wrestling, Ju-jitsu, Judo etc. covering ground control, bars, locks, chokes, strangles, cranks, butts, bites, tearing, gouges etc., reintroducing the many illegal and banned techniques from the beginning of the century. Pins are the bedrock of any ground fighting system. Once you have mastered these everything else will follow. How to gain control and completely dominate even the biggest opponent from every and any angle - on the ground - using base techniques - and finish from the same position using pummelling atemi (striking) techniques.

    Pentjak-Silat: The Indonesian Fighting Art

    Image

This book covers the techniques of the various styles of Silat. At 143 pgs and 6 chapters, the book is best divided into 4 sections:

Striking tools/history (hand techniques covered like in karate manuals only with the weapons context of Silat Hands vs the Knife (that's right, you get that FIRST) Training Exercises (stances and 15 technique drills) Combat situations (covers empty hand attacks and some ground work)

The perfect companion to Draeger's "Fighting and Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago", this is more technique oriented ....... I personally liked the hands vs knife section of the book.

Muay Thai - The Art of Fighting

    Image

Muay Thai is an ancient system of using bodily parts both for defense and offensive combat. Thai warriors has effectively battled invaders and all sorts of enemies, even while outnumbered and out-equipped in weapons - literally by bare hands, feet, elbows and knees. Even nowadays this ferocious Martial art is being used in its combat form by Army of Thailand, and many of its principles, techniques and tactics serve for advanced military combat training in many countries worldwide, as well as for Mixed Martial Arts, fights without rules and similar real combat championships.

Most recently this Fighting Art has been widely promoted by young talented boxer Panom Yeerum well known by his Western nickname as Tony Jaa - who has achieved huge recognition both as a fighter and stunts man. He has made Muay Thai synonymous with the titles of his last 2 excellent movies "Ong Bak" (Western title: TheThai Warrior/ Muay Thai Warrior) and "Tom Yum Goong" (Western title: The Protector) - in fact the present popularity of Muay Thai in the West has inspired to direct and act in his own new movie - the sequel "Ong Bak 2" which supposed to come up in late 2007 or 2008. A lot of new websites dedicated to Muay Thai has been started and no doubt more will erupt, as well as increasing numbers of people joining clubs to study this terrific Martial Art!

This e-book will help any beginner to learn this very effective style of fighting, well recognized as perhaps the most efficient and deadly.

Chi Nei Tsang: Internal Organ Chi Massage

    Image

I have yet to find another source on this type of massage system. The Chi Lei system is different from other massage system in the sense that it works directly with the organs, detoxifying them through massage. Mantak Chia book on the topic is comprehensive, detailed and clear enough to be read. However some of the massage techniques are to difficult to convey in a book and it will be helpful to learn on video. I gave the book a 4 star instead of a 5 because the illustrations are sometimes not clear. The book should have used photographs to show some techniques and points.
