Sleyman the Magnificent is the soundtrack for the film of the same name which focuses on the life of the great Sultan of the Ottoman empire. Sultan Sleyman reigned from 1520-1566 and was renowned as a consummate reformer of law and administration. His was a golden age of art and architecture. Brian Keane's soundtrack embodies this historic sense of greatness and splendor. The music is at once exciting and profound. Keane has brilliantly scored traditional Turkish melodies and his own original melodies from a combination of authentic Turkish instruments. These instruments include the tanbur (long necked lute), daire (drum), kanun (plucked boxed zither), and kaval (rim-blown flutea pastoral instrument associated with shepherds and nomads). The film aired on the PBS network and was a winner of the American Film Festival and the Ohio State Film Festival awards. It was produced in conjunction with the opening of an art exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. for which major funding for the film was provided by the Republic of Turkey.

Fire Dance is a natural progression from Suleyman. A plethora of Middle Eastern and North African instruments has been blended with synthesizers, guitar, and sophisticated orchestrations. The focus of Fire Dance has been expanded beyond Turkey, to include music from North African, Egyptian, and other Middle Eastern and Arabic sources. This recording begins with the sound of the desert wind in Somewhere in the Sahara. Faruk's enchanted ney enters from the distance with flourishes of goat bells. Orchestrations sneak in and build to a guitar solo with lavish synthesizer effects. The whole track then dissolves into Oglan Boyun, as if we have traveled over a dune and discovered a village in celebration, surrounded by the vast desert. As Oglan Boyun ends, we are left with Faruk's haunting voice floating out of the wind in A Call to Prayer. This soulful segment gives way to a magical ney section orchestrated to depict a garden of earthly delights. Faruk's voice returns in a powerful whirlwind of sound, followed by the drifting Desert Twilight. Brian's guitar opens this melodic piece with a rich, peaceful introduction. Faruk enters on the ney in an expansive and warm tone, complemented in the bridge by the baglama, adding an Eastern flavor. The music fades, leaving the listener with serenely quiet beauty evoking the title, Desert Twilight. A Passage East is a showcase for both Faruk's impeccable percussion and Brian's superb guitar chops. In Song of the Pharaohs, the wind and Faruk's haunting ney return to create the mystical impression of the distant time of the ancient pharaohs' rule. Enchanted by elaborate orchestrations, flourishes of windchimes, the voices of strangers, distant horns, and synthesizers that seem to defy conventional spatial dimensions, this piece assumes a psychedelic atmosphere. Beledy introduces us to the zurna, an oboe-like instrument with a very distinctive Middle Eastern sound. This composition is in the Arabic style, featuring very strong passages. Fire Dance is an energetic piece that demonstrates why Tekbilek and Keane are at the forefront of their respective musicial fields and the magical fertility of their collaboration. Ask is a contemporary Middle Eastern standard showcasing Faruk's proficiency on the oud. Village Song is a traditional Turkish folk song in 9/8 meter featuring Faruk on percussion. Modern Mystics brings the two musicians/composers together, on ney and guitar, in a meditative setting. Sahara (Reprise), with Brian on guitar, was an out take that was too special to leave off this recording. Spirit of Ancestors shows a deep mystical side with Faruk's powerful, searching voice. Halay concludes the recording with an uplifting, joyous celebration and driving rhythm. With Fire Dance, Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Brian Keane have created a unique recording that embraces many moods, at once energetic and meditative, mystical and joyous. Imbued with grace, this music transports the listener to a magical land where patterns of rich Middle Eastern traditions are joined in music. Fire Dance is an adventure in transformation from which there is no turning back.

"Beyond the Sky" featrures the return collaboration and stunning musicianship of music producer, composer, synthesist, and virtuoso guitarist, Brian Keane, and the middle eastern master musician and multi-instrumentalist, Omar Faruk Tekbilek. The project is a follow-up to their critically acclaimed earlier recordings "Suleyman the Magnificent" and "Fire Dance". They are joined for this recording by three musicians who are all masters on their instruments. Ara Dinkjian is one of the foremost "oud" players in the world. Son of popular Armenian singer Onnik Dinkjian, Ara began performing professionally as a boy and earned a degree from Hartt School of Music in the U.S. In 1976, he formed the group Night Ark and recorded two releases with his composition "Sarasin" becoming a #1 hit in Turkey. Ara was invited to join Brian and Faruk in a 1991 concert for John Schaefer's New Sounds Concert series at Merkin Hall in New York City. The results were so exciting that he was invited back to participate in this recording. Ara brought to the recording fellow Night Ark member, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, a native Armenian percussionist whose professional career started at age 11 and whose extensive credits include performing and recording with Al Dimeola, Chet Baker, Arthur Blythe, and many others. Also joining the project in his debut recording appearance is the bright new talent, Hassan Isikkut. Growing up in a family of musicians in Turkey, Hassan has developed a unique and dazzling style of playing the kanun, a traditional middle eastern harp-like instrument. "Beyond the Sky" takes the original concept begun in 1987 with "Suleyman The Magnificent" then continued with "Fire Dance" a step further. The music is truly cross cultural, both abandoning and embracing musical traditions. The music is characterized by energy, feelings of immense spirituality, and impeccable musicianship.

Known primarily for his work on the Ney, he is also a master of Middle Eastern percussion (Darbuka, Bandir, etc.), double reed instruments such as the Zurna and Mijwiz, and the guitar-like Baglama and Jura. In 1971, already an established musician in Turkey, Faruk toured Europe and the United States for the first time. Eventually Faruk moved to Upstate New York, where he now lives. Since coming to the United States in 1976, Faruk has recorded and performed with several notable musicians including: Arif Mardin, jazz musicians Don Cherry and Karl Berger, and rock drummer, Ginger Baker. He has made concert appearances worldwide including the Kool Jazz Festival, and the Israeli Music Festival. Whirling marks Faruk's debut as a solo recording artist. Crescent Moon is a bewitching blend of Western and Near Eastern sounds. Dont be misled by the presence of synthesizer wizard Steve Roach, or keyboardist/guitarist Brian Keane, or the guest appearance by the rollicking Bulgarian saxophonist Yuri Yunakovthis is an album with clear and deep roots in the ancient legacy of Turkey and Arabian music. In fact, six of the ten tracks are Faruk's arrangements of traditional folk and classical songs from the Arab, Turkish, and Armenian traditions.
Tekbileks newest project also draws on the sounds of Azerbaijani folksong, Persian mysticism, and classical Arabian belly dancing. He even pays tribute, on the song Yalel, to the famed Egyptian singer Omm Kulthum. (Tekbilek himself is half Egyptian.) Working with many of the same musicians who have made such distinctive contributions to Tekbileks earlier albums, he creates a kind of global musica music that acknowledges Greek, Indian, and of course Turkish music, and attempts to find a common ground between all of these. Perhaps his greatest achievement on Crescent Moon is that the album is more than the sum of its parts: it consistently evokes the ecstatic trance of the Sufi dervishes, the biting winds of the desert at night, the rich and exotic scents of an Oriental market, and yet it does so without clearly staying in any one musical tradition.
Much of Crescent Moon is deeply personal. Yunnus is a medley of four Sufi tunes, and reflects his longtime practice of this mystical branch of Islam. Adanali is the name both of a folksong and of the town where Tekbilek was born. The album itself is released as Tekbilek marks his 47th birthdayand he reports that both the numbers 4 and 7 have had recurring significance throughout his life. (He has 7 brothers; he was fourth in line; the street address of the house he grew up in was 47; and Crescent Moon is the fourth album he has made with longtime colleagues Arto Tuncboyaciyan, Ara Dinkjian, and Hasan Isikkut.) Ironically, this most personal recording is also easily accessible to Western listeners. By following his own spiritual impulses, and by ignoring geographic and cultural boundaries, Tekbilek has forged a panMiddle Eastern music. Crescent Moon is at once contemplative and exciting, full of lively rhythms and lovely melodiestimeless, and yet very much of our time.

Turkish classical music, refined in the Ottoman Empire from the 16th through 18th centuries, reflects profound spiritual influences, most notably those of the mystic Sufi Mevlevi or "whirling dervishes." Multi-instrumentalist and singer Omar Faruk Tekbilek forges a compelling eclectic approach to this Islamic devotional tradition. His virtuoso technique and uninhibited approach to composition and sacred musical interpretation blends a sweeping array of Levantine percussion, wind and stringed instruments with bongos, keyboards, toy piano, electric and acoustic six- and twelve-stringed steel and classical guitars, flamenco guitar and palmas, violin and cello. Faruk leads a practiced ensemble whose sinuous exploration of his own and classical Turkish compositions, weaving an extended meditative tapestry of sound whose layered texture defies easy categorization, inviting audiences themselves to surrender their aesthetic preconceptions and listen anew. -Michael Stone

This compilation contains Faruk's finest work, including a previously unissued performance from a WNYC-FM radio concert recorded in New York City in 1990 and a track by Faruk's old band, The Sultans, culled from a private release. "Working with Faruk has been one of the most satisfying muiscal experiences of my life," says Keane. Both helped with the music selection on this compilation, which reflects some of the finest flowerings of Faruk's Tree of Patience.

Looking at Earth from Space, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe all come together in the Mediterranean, literally meaning "the Middle Earth."The immense liquid entity of the Mediterranean Sea has blended these
different cultures for millennia, and Turkey, situated at the Eastern Mediterranean, has long been a geographical and cultural crossroads. So it is fitting that on Alif such a world class musician as Omar Faruk Tekbilek would serve as a transdimensional ship, traveling from port to port, historyto future, style to style, sharing his immense gifts and reminding us that art is a glimpse of the Divine. For perhaps more than any other art, music supercedes social differences by showing the similarities in humanity.Musical notes don't represent nationality, but rather express emotionality.
Born of Turkish and Egyptian parents and currently residing in the U.S.,Tekbilek - a multi-instrumentalist par excellence - personally symbolizes the Mediterranean's diversity-in-unity. Still, he is a citizen of the world,
and Alif is proof positive of the worldly nature of Tekbilek's musical talents. Alif is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, and it also signifies the first letter for Allah, the Maker, the Cause of All Existence,
and the Divine Realization of Love. The seventh song and title track, "Alif," is a Sufi masterpiece of Devotional love, and love in all its forms - divine love, love of life and romantic love - is the theme running through
all of Alif's twelve songs. Like adding fresh ingredients to an already delicious dish, a group of internationally acclaimed musicians add their unique spice to Tekbilek's story of love: multi-instrumentalist /producer Steve Shehan, Greek singer Glykeria, Israeli singer Zahava Ben, Persian singer Mamak Khadem, Bulgarian singer Galina Durmushliyska, Turkish singer Suzy and Spanish guitarist Jose Antonio Rodriguez Munoz.
With its international talent, emphasis on contemporary realizations of traditional songs, accomplished singing, and focus on love, the album you have in your hands is yet another milestone in Tekbilek's distinguished career. From the stunning simple beauty of the title track, to the syncopated sophistication of "Laundry Girl," Alif is bursting with inviting and rewarding music. Enjoy this joyful listening journey, for on Alif Tekbilek and friends embody the thoughts of the great Sufi seeker Rumi:
"Welcome, melody - you are that melody which has brought a sign from the spiritual world. Pass the ear and strike upon our souls, for you are the life of this dead world."
