Release Notes:
--------
With his velvety yet rough voice and his compelling melancholic ballads he fits
perfectly into the real existing wintertime with early dark evenings. His
semi-electric dynamic songwriter/pop hymns with their driving departure power
clearly aim towards the direction of spring and the first outings with the
rooftop down. Broken is Todd Thibaud's 5th "real" studio album, following 2004's
Northern Skies and is again his strongest, in any case his most personal album.

Todd Thibaud started his career at the beginning of the 90's in the Courage
Brothers, a band that released two first class albums with Something Strong (92)
and Wood (95) - both later were re-released by Blue Rose. Even back then Thibaud
captivated with catchy and melodic harmony songs and an exquisit pop guitar
sound. With his '97 solo debut Favorite Waste Of Time the man from Vermont who
now lives near Boston erected his first monument at the songwriter/pop
firmament. What followed were the classic Blue Rose studio albums Little Mystery
(1999), Squash (2000), Northern Skies (2004) and an interesting lengthy phase
with the supergroup Hardpan, where he got together with the singer/songwriters
Joseph Parsons, Chris Burroughs and Terry Lee Hale for a studio and a live
album. To list all other live recordings that were published before, between and
after - solo or with band, as CD or DVD would simply be too much. Recently
Thibaud was seen alongside his musical friend Joseph Parsons, with whom he
toured through Germany in 2007 and for which they especially recorded an album
together.

His sensitive and attractive singing, these compelling harmonies, light and
sweet westcoast-style guitar riffs, cleverly arranged acoustic/electric parts
with a punch of heartland & prairie rock have turned him into an absolute master
of familiar nearly traditional singer/songwriter music with rock and pop
character that will last forever. Of course all these attributes also apply for
Broken however the reflective and quiet moments prevail. In his thirteen songs
Thibaud reflects on private feelings from recent times about love and all the
ups and downs. "I Go On", the first track on the album, is such a song: Slightly
melancholic in retrospect yet a clear exclamation mark in looking forward - "I
Go On" - and how! Song #2 is already the title track - fierce rhythm guitar,
thriving beat, flowing organ a wonderful singing electric lead guitar, multi
vocal choruses. Different to his earlier projects Thibaud this time only gave
his bands simple blueprints of the songs to start off with. Together they
developed the arrangements in the studio without long rehearsals and basically
without overdubs - so to say impromptu. This approach provides for a refreshing
dynamic and spontaneous feeling, the positive vibes go straight into the ear of
the listener.

The rockabilly-type "Changing Now" in a Rodney Crowell-meets-Buddy Holly-style
is a noticeable increase in tempo before "Simple Man" sets a first mark as a
great roots ballad. The dominating and wonderfully buzzing bottleneck
accompaniment is from guest guitarist Adam Steinberg (Patty Griffin, Reto
Burrell, Dixie Chicks) who produced the two Thibaud albums Squash and Northern
Skies. This time Thibaud for the first time has the sole responsibility. Even
though it is difficult to point out a single track on an album flowing over with
great songs the catchy Americana pop'n'roll track "Drifting" needs to be
mentioned - it seems predestined for radio airplay. Also the tremendous "Man
That I Am" that follows after, a true killer ballad with viscid Memphis/Muscle
Shoals flair takes lasting effect and reminds of the mighty deeds of Kris
Kristofferson and John Hiatt. "The Right One", familiar to all insiders through
last year's Parsons Thibaud album, comes in a laid-back acoustic arrangement
with the splendid singer/songwriter Lori McKenna as duet partner that gets under
your skin.

"Blue Skies Back" goes full steam ahead - Todd and his band are rocking away
with twang guitars, fat organ, catching refrains and a great riff,
straightforward in 3:25 - perfect length for a single. Like on a few other songs
another friend from Boston helps with fitting harmony vocals - Bill Janovitz,
boss of Buffalo Tom and Blue Rose labelmate. Time to introduce the band: with
Dave Limina on the keys (predominantly organ) and drummer Milt Sutton two former
companions from ancient Courage Brothers times have returned. Bass player Jeff
St. Pierre and the terrific always playing the right licks electric guitarist
Thomas Juliano, for many years regular band member of Seven Mary Three, have
been playing on and off with Thibaud since the end of the 90s - no wonder that
they function together like a well oiled machinery. On "You & Me" Lori McKenna
joins in once again as a singer - a happy ending to a really special Todd
Thibaud oeuvre that points optimistically into the future.
