The first bath-houses, built in 2nd century BC, were simple washing facilities. By 284 AD there were around 1000 private bath-houses and 11 public ones. During imperial times, baths grew to gigantic proportions and increased in splendor. Emperors had baths built to show off their power and wealth, thus they were often extremely lavish, full of gold and marble. Among the most impressive in Rome were those opened by the emperors Caracalla and Diocletian. They became huge centers where thousands of people spent their leisure hours and cost only a quandrans (the smallest Roman coin) to get in. The bathhouses were open from dawn until sunset.
