Osunlade has been making music since his childhood and started releasing in the late '80s, worked with and for such diverse artists as Musiq, Eric Benet, and Grammy Award winning artist Patti LaBelle and even produced some music for the Sesame Street TV show. Osunlade's musical spectrum not only covers jazz, r 'n' b and classic soul, but also New York deep house music. Osunlade launched his own label releasing tracks including Erro's Don't Change, which can be found in the crates of big name DJs including Gilles Peterson, Masters At Work and Tony Humphries. When not in the studio, Osunlade can be found behind the decks, mixing eclectic and spiritual sets. |

This is the first new release by Great Britain's Soul Jazz label -- widely known for its dynamite reissues of everything from killer Nuyorican soul to New Orleans funk to funky and militant jazz -- in years. This debut album by a New York-based house artist comes as a surprise. But it's a welcome one. Osunlade drenches his house in Brazilian, funk, and Latin colors, blending it all into a thoroughly modern dancefloor music that is as compelling to the ears as it is motivating to the booty. The singles from the set include "Blackman," a poetic move toward jazzy house with sampled chords from Bobby Konders' "The Poem." It's a late-night groove, laid-back but insistent, with a rap about Osunlade's upbringing and his spiritual beliefs. It's a kind of housed-out manifesto of positive Afrocentrism. Also notable is the traditional Brazilian tune "Oxissi de Focha Branca," with its drum chants and a call and response rhythm that retains its field recording primitivism long after the house beats kick in. The set closes with "The Deep," a driving house rhythm set against a rolling, one-note bassline interspersed with a two-chord, three-sequence vamp kissed by a harmonica sample in the groove. The harmonica is the lead "melodic" instrument (it's a Charlie Musselwhite sample), though it's just riffing in the cut and carrying the track through its intervals. This is an auspicious debut by a young cat who has brought something new and very different to the world from the house scene in New York. |

Osunlade undertakes a panoramic journey on Aquarian Moon, the music producers impassioned love letter to the Greek Island of Santorini and its rich culture. Recorded live over a twelve-day period, the albums a richly orchestrated and stylistically encompassing affair, with its thirteen (one hidden) vibrant cuts working their way through a comprehensive array of house, Latin, African, jazz, soul, and funk rhythms. The equally atmospheric and danceable disc impresses technically too, with Osunlade playing no less than fifteen different instruments (drums, piano, mini moog, electric bass, etc.) and handling most vocal chores too. In addition, tracks like Circles impress in demonstrating how convincingly the Yoruba label head realizes the illusion of live performance, despite the albums constructed status.
Thira, an elegantly soulful setting of chanting voices, strings, piano, and percussion (shakers, bongos, drums), makes for an enticing overture before the title cuts languorous vibe declares itself, with hushed voices hypnotically chanting the title throughout its seven lush minutes. Elsewhere, Osunlade does a remarkably convincing Jaco imitation in the delicate ballad Fingerblood, drapes slamming soul-funk breaks over Oia in Winter, and bathes Casablanca Soul in sunlit house flavour. |

Spiritual and musical guru Osunlade has always been an inspiration to the house music fraternity so it went to the top of the pile. And it has stayed there ever since. Superlative composer, arranger, innovative creator and musician, this enigma has created an album of 10 grooves. Some of the tracks took inspiration from his recent trip to Turkey, "A Cludy Mist" and "A Monks Tear" and a couple, "Queens Battle" and "139th Street" finally see a commercial release 10 years after their creation. Highlights include the opener "A Cloudy Mist" with its latin-fuelled rhythm, warm jazzy Rhodes and emphatic bababa vocal melody which is a summer musical gem; the almost filmscore build and emotion of "A Monks Tear" with chanting and oriental synths, bouncing bassline and Spanish guitar; the Wurlitzer/ wooden block "Stomp," the late night synth groove "Momma's Groove" with its jazzy sax, spoken work and bouncing Rhodes and "My Reflection" with its sparring latin rhythm, full song and soulful backing vocals with spoken word. The elements within are beyond comparison. |
