Plot Outline: A classic of British cinema and renowned for its cinematography, the film is loosely based on Hans Christian Andersens fairy tale and in fact features a fifteen minute ballet choreographed by Robert Helpmann, which narrates the story of a young girl who buys a pair of red shoes that force her to dance continuously, forsaking family and love, until she dies from exhaustion. The film itself revolves around a similar theme, juxtaposing the complete devotion to ones art, on the one hand, and the comforts of human love, on the other.
Victoria Page (Shearer) a young, unknown dancer from an aristocratic background arranges a party, in order to meet Boris Lermontov (Walbrook), the strict but charismatic manager of the Ballet Lermontov. He takes her on as a student but after seeing her dance in a matinee performance of Swan Lake, he realises her potential and invites her to join the company and travel to Paris and Monte Carlo. She soon rises to be his prima ballerina and Lermontov decides to cast her as the lead dancer in a new ballet, entitled The Red Shoes. Julian Craster (Goring), a brilliant young composer, is engaged to write the score. Initially Vicky and Julian argue but they soon fall in love. The ballet is a success but Lermontov is furious with the couple, fires Julian and Vicky follows him. They marry and although Lermontov releases Vicky from her contract, he forbids her to ever perform The Red Shoes; a decision he will later recant when he invites Vicky to dance in a revival of the ballet. Vicky will then be faced with a choice between her love for Julian and her love for dancing.
This is one of the first films to portray the world of ballet and the Powell-Pressburger team decided to use dancers who could act rather than actors who could dance a bit. In order to create a realistic feeling of a ballet company at work, they assembled their own ballet company, featuring Robert Helpmann, Lonide Massine, Ludmilla Tchrina and, of course, Moira Shearer.
Awards: The film was nominated for 5 Oscars and won "Best Music Score" and "Best Art Direction. It also won the Golden Globe for "Best Music Score".
