P G Wodehouse - Jeeves & Wooster - 6 Audio Books
| Quote: |
Bertie Wooster's friend Gussie Fink-Nottle is sentenced to 14 days for wading in the fountain at Trafalgar Square. Bertie is worried that Gussets fianc Madeline will be angry because she has a distressing habit of turning her attentions to Bertie when her fianc upsets her. Bertie has the bright idea of impersonating Gussie, and showing up at Deverill Hall. The situation is wonderfully comical when Gussie shows up, posing as Bertie. Only Jeeves, arriving in his own disguise, can sort out this mess. |

Fate draws Bertie back to Totleigh Towers, home of the horrifyingly drippy Madeline Basset and the simply horrifying Watkyn "Pop" Bassett. Bertie is worried, as the only obstacle to a trip down the aisle for him and Madeline is the fact that his friend Gussie and Madeline are in love with each other. When Madeline tries to turn Gussie into a vegetarian and Gussie rebels, Bertie is panic-stricken. Add to the picture a charming cook offering Gussie forbidden treats, Stephanie Byng and her dog Bartholomew, and the nonstop rivalry between Sir Watkyn Bassett and Bertie's Uncle Tom, and Jeeves has his hands full sorting through the problems that dog Bertie's footsteps. |

Bertie's enthusiastic banjolele playing inspires his neighbors to have him evicted and it's even enough to move his able butler to give notice. But the two aren't parted for long: Bertie moves to a cottage on Baron Chuffnell's country estate, and "Chuffy" naturally hires the now-available Jeeves for himself. To Bertie's surprise, Chuffy is also hosting an American millionaire and his fetching daughter, Pauline, who once was engaged to Bertie. When her father decides that Bertie must make an honest woman of Pauline, even though she only has eyes for Chuffy, the millionaire holds Bertie captive on his yacht. Thank goodness Jeeves is there to aid in Bertie's escape by disguising him although the disguise leads to more trouble for Bertie, particularly with the local police. Fortunately, Jeeves just might have a solution that will fix everything. Jonathan Cecil brings to his reading of this lively tale years of experience in delivering Wodehouse's works to the writer's many fans. |

This 1938 novel is off to a rollicking start when Aunt Dahlia demands that Bertie Wooster help her dupe an antique dealer into selling her an 18th-century cow-creamer. Dahlia trumps Bertie's objections by threatening to sever his standing invitation to her house for lunch, an unthinkable prospect given Bertie's devotion to the cooking of her chef, Anatole. A web of complications grows as Bertie's pal Gussie Fink-Nottle asks for counseling in the matter of his impending marriage to Madeline Bassett. It seems Madeline isn't his only interest; Gussie also wants to study the effects of a full moon on the love life of newts. Added to the cast of eccentrics are Roderick Spode, leader of a fascist organization called the Saviors of Britain, who also wants that cow-creamer, and an unusual man of the cloth known as Rev. H. P. "Stinker" Pinker. As usual, butler Jeeves becomes a focal point for all the plots and ploys of these characters, and in the end only his cleverness can rescue Bertie from being arrested, lynched, and engaged by mistake! |

Unable to refuse to help a friend, Bertie is placed in one difficult
situation after another, always under the watchful eye of his butler.
Jeeves constantly works in the background, undermining Bertie's autonomy
and moving the narrative in unexpected directions. He often fails to
let his employer in on his plots, and a large proportion of his schemes
turn out to expose Bertie to ridicule.
Yet Jeeves also ensures that Bertie's life runs smoothly, steering him
through the pitfalls which face a rich young man with too much time
on his hands. When in one story Bertie overhears Jeeves describing his
employer as "not intelligent", he sets out to disprove the butler's
assessment. If it is predictable that things do not go according to
plan, then it is Wodehouse's brilliant grasp of comedy which makes the
manner in which things go wrong so constantly surprising. And, of course,
by the end of the tale Jeeves has proved himself both inimitable and
indispensable. |

Here are the zany misadventures of foggy-minded aristocrat Bertie Wooster and his sharp-witted valet, Jeeves. They visit Steeple Bumpleigh, home of Bertie's Uncle Percy, also the home of Bertie's ex-fiance, Florence, and her new fianc, Constable Stilton Cheesewright. In addition, Bertie's cousin, Nobby, wants Bertie's help in gaining Uncle Percy's approval of her writer fianc. To complicate the romantic antics, Stilton thinks Bertie wants to reconcile with Florence (as does Florence) and threatens bodily harm. Into the muddle comes Jeeves, who, as always, saves the day. It's hard to improve on this treasure, but Jonathan Cecil does it with an impeccable, wildly funny narration |
