Adam Adamant: A sixties superhero who doesn't swing, not even slightly.
Adam Adamant Lives! tells the story of an Edwardian adventurer who wakes up in the swinging Sixties, having been frozen in a block of ice by his nemesis, "The Face". The show is about how the dashing adventurer (Gerald Harper) thwarts evil, overcomes temptation, and buys a Mini.
It's very much "What Doctor Who did next", as the timelord's creator Sydney Newman and his first producer Verity Lambert joined forces again to come up with a BBC version of The Avengers. Adam is a Reithian version of Steed - all the suits and gentility, but with all rakishness removed. Adam is a very proper hero, who belongs to all the right clubs, and even has a butler.
The clash between Adam's terribly strict morals and the permissive society of the Sixties was the main source of humour in the series. This meant severely limited opportunities for sexual chemistry between Harper and his co-star Juliet Harmer, who played reluctant side-kick Miss Jones. A nicely brought-up modern woman, her role was mostly to mope around after Adam, flirting mournfully and getting into scrapes.
The show ran for two seasons of incredibly Avengers-esque adventures, as Adam thwarts sinister ladies' charities, terribly well-brought-up satanists, killer dresses, and cigar-chomping female crimelords.
Adam Adamant Lives! may have been a little starched, but it certainly was fab. Mike Myers owes it a huge debt.
There were originally 29 black and white episodes composing two series, plus one unbroadcast pilot (elements of which were used in the opening episode). Many of these were held on video tape but wiped by the BBC in the 1970s (in one case, a 35mm film recording is known to have been destroyed). The result is that only sixteen episodes remained in the archives when the BBC realised the value of such material, including the first and last episodes in broadcast order. These were mainly in the form of the original broadcast 35mm film recordings, with a handful of episodes as 16mm film recordings or reduction prints. The episode D For Destruction, thought among those lost forever, was however recovered in 2003 � it was found at the BBC in a mislabelled film can. It has since been screened every year at the Missing Believed Wiped event.
The Picture is sometimes a grainy, greyish Black and White owing its mediocre Quality to the original Material it was copied from.

A Vintage Year For Scoundrels
In 1902 gentleman adventurer Adam Adamant is betrayed by the beautiful Louise, and he falls into the clutches of his arch-enemy, the Face, who condemns him to a living death by freezing him in a block of ice. Then, in 1966, workmen excavating a building site uncover Adam�s preserved body, and he is taken to hospital. Confused and terrified by the sights and sounds of Sixties London Adam is found by a girl named Georgina Jones. She is amazed to meet her legendary idol face to face, and so takes him to her flat to recover. However, when Georgina later witnesses a murder in the nightclub where she works, she soon encounters ruthless racketeer Margo Kane. It is up to Adam to stop the villainess - but can he compromise his maxim of never hurting a lady�?

Death Has a Thousand Faces...
Georgina witnesses two motorcyclists stabbing a man to death, and finds a clue in the shape of a stick of seaside rock. When the men corner her Georgina is rescued by Adam, and together they find not only the words �Blackpool� in the candy, but also a complicated diagram. Heading for the popular seaside resort, they uncover an elaborate scheme involving the theft of �50 million and the destruction of the Golden Mile of amusement arcades�

More Deadly than the Sword
Sir Ernest Hampton is blackmailed over compromising photographs showing him with his mistress while his wife is away, and he is forced to hand over military secrets concerning Britain�s armed forces. Called to Number Ten Downing Street, Adam disapprovingly agrees to offer his assistance by acting as courier for the exchange of the secrets for the negatives. Adam travels to Hong Kong to meet a contact in a geisha house, while Georgina invites herself along too to �help�. While Georgina gets into trouble by posing as a geisha, Adam soon finds himself facing three Samurai warriors - will his skills as a swordsman be enough to save the day..?

The Sweet Smell of Disaster
After a research scientist is murdered for his revolutionary new formula, a new detergent called �Cloud 7� appears on the market, along with an advertising campaign that uses blue plastic carnations given away free with each packet. The flowers contain an unusual scent which proves to be addictive to anyone smelling them. As the nation - including Georgina and Simms - become infatuated with the flowers, Adam smells a rat, and he decides to investigate the manufactures, B.K. Soap. He soon uncovers an unscrupulous plot by the bosses to use this addiction to increase their profits and triple their turnover �

While attending an important reception, Adam complements the wife of the Italian Vice Consul on her dress - only to witnesses her inexplicable death immediately after. When Adam, Simms and Georgina discover five similar deaths ocurred in recent weeks, Adam decides to pay a visit to the Italian embassy. Here Adam is knocked out by a fashion model sent to recover the dress, but Georgina manages to tear off some of the material; the label points them to Roger Clair, whose deadly dresses also contain bugging devices. When a government official named Statton attends a party in a large country house, the pleasant proceedings soon turn into a sacrificial black magic ceremony. After a minister informs Adam that internal investigation shows that Statton is leaking secret information, the adventurer goes to visit Statton. But the official is murdered before Adam can deal with his assailant; finding an old invitation to Pearmain Hall in the killer's wallet Adam sets off on the trail - Georgina follows him, but then finds herself in danger of becoming the next sacrificial offering...

The Doomsday Plan
Adam is contacted by Hinchcombe of Scotland Yard, who is concerned with recent events: several newsreaders have been knocked out and temporarily replaced by doubles who then warn the viewers of the end of the world, and equipment from a broadcasting van has also been stolen. Meanwhile, Georgina attends a doomsday sermon from Doctor Mort, who prophesises the end of the world in a week's time. She then finds copies of a newspaper headlined with 'Russia delivers ultimatum' which are dated for the day Mort predicted. After air raid sirens sound and London is evacuated, Adam discovers that the prediction of the attack is a ruse to clear the city so that a gang of thieves can then rob all the banks at their leisure�

Adam is asked to locate a deadly virus capable of destroying human tissue which has been stolen from the Insecticides Division of the Ministry of Agriculture. This lethal by-product is highly infectious and is capable of spreading worldwide in just twenty-four hours, and the only lead is a photograph of a former Miss Earth beauty queen who vanished almost a year before. Adam investigates the �Cafe Val Deurn�, where the monthly beauty contest is held, only to find that Georgina has just won the competition, and the prize is an invitation that she just cannot refuse�

The League of Uncharitable Ladies
Adam learns of a number of recent deaths in which little old ladies are killing businessmen using poisoned charity flags. Jarrot, the colleague of one of the recent victims, tells Adam that he has received an invitation to die at 10 o�clock that night. After a series of murders occurs in the 51st Yeomanry, Adam is contacted by General Mongerson of Strategic Command, who asks him to return to service in his old regiment so that he can help track down the killers. The regiment is now under the command of the Territorial Army, and led by the fanatical Colonel Mannering. Adam discovers that Mannering is furious with proposed plans to disband the T.A., and he will stop at nothing to ensure that the scheme is never approved�

Black Echo
The Bank of England enlists Adam�s aid to verify the identity of someone claiming to be the Grand Duchess Vorokhov; she wishes to withdraw her fortune of �150 million, and Adam knew the real Grand Duchess in 1901. At first Adam refuses, until he sees a photograph of her wearing a unique brooch once given to Louise that year. He sets off for her estate in Surrey known as Mede Hall House; however, when Georgina checks the address she discovers that a delivery man was recently driven mad there, by something terrifying that he saw in the basement. Meanwhile, Adam�s investigations have lead to him being reunited with a familiar face - and an old enemy�
