Fire and Freezing
Fire and ice are the theme for a snow-sprinkled edition, which occasionally "nose-dives into the carnal" as a result of question master Stephen Fry's skittish mood. Although Fry's elegant delivery of even the smuttiest line makes it hard to take offence, the sensitive viewer might care to cover their ears when he's talking about the language of fans and a party game involving Christopher Biggins. The rest is good, clean and clever - if ludicrous - fun of the sort we're used to hearing on Radio 4 but rarely get from TV quiz shows. QI newcomer Dom Joly does well when faced with Christmas cracker-style questions such as "What happened to the fireman's pole?" as do Clive Anderson and Rob Brydon, but once again Alan Davies - to quote Fry - "rushes headlong like a puppy into the wall of ignorance".

Flotsam and Jetsam
When did QI become so naughty? It occasionally sails close to the wind, but in the first episode of a new series it heads straight for waves of *** and innuendo. Which makes it no less funny, of course, particularly when guests Andy Hamilton, Rob Brydon, Charlie Higson and Alan Davies are in full flow. There's a nautical theme to the show, which is based on "flotsam" and other things maritime. Everyone is on fine form, and are at their best when gently teasing question-master Stephen Fry, who gets flustered and comes badly unstuck when telling a story about TV's Batman and Robin.
