Agatha Christie Audiobook MEGATHREAD

Why Didn't They Ask Evans by agatha christie
book description

It's classic Christie. Amid a peaceful English setting, a hiker dies at the foot of a cliff. Was he pushed, or did he slip? Christie's original plot twists make it easy to arrive at incorrect conclusions and then have to rethink the mystery. Emilia Fox, who has a name worthy to be a Christie character herself, has a crisply captivating voice as she showcases characters who are lively, clever, sympathetic, and detestable, as the unfolding story demands. Packaging is good, other than an overcrowded cover. Note the Orange Triangle announcing that this is a "Mystery Masters" and thus unabridged.

Towards Zero by Agatha Christie
book description

Neville Strange, his wives (past and present), friends, and family converge for a late summer weekend. When two seemingly unrelated murders occur, it's up to Superintendent Battle to go back twenty years to uncover the truth. Narrator Hugh Fraser, who plays Captain Hastings on the A&E and PBS Poirot series, expertly handles male, female, young, and old individuals while creating a constant sense of foreboding. He also excels at presenting the nuances of the story's crucial moments. An interesting cast of suspects keep listeners in doubt until the very end. This is a wonderful choice for Christie fans and those who enjoy a taste of times past.

Three Blind Mice by agatha christie
Book description

A blinding snowstorm--and a homicidal maniac--traps a small party of friends in an isolated estate. Out of this deceptively simple set-up, Agatha Christie fashioned one of her most ingenious puzzlers, which, in turn, would provide the basis for The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in history. From this classic title novella to the deliciously clever gems on its tail (solved to perfection by Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple), this rare collection of murder most foul showcases the intimtable Christie at her inventive best, proving her reputation as "the champion deceiver of our time."

Three Act Tragedy by agatha christie
book description

In Act I, at a dinner party given by a famed British actor, one of the guests drops dead. In Act II, at a second dinner, which includes some of the same guests, another death occurs. Two dead men may equal murder. One of the guests, Hercule Poirot, follows suspects (often literally) and clues, both real and "staged," to bring the curtain down on the killer. Andrew Sachs gives this minor Christie vigor and authenticity, even to an unoriginal motive. His Poirot is methodical, polite, and perfectly accented, but sounds like other Poirots. Sachs's best interpretations are those of the actor's young fiance and the killer.

They Came to Baghdad by agatha christie
book description

In these days of increased awareness of the Middle East, it's fascinating to hear Agatha Christie's view of Iraq just after WWII. Albeit, one learns about Iraq by way of a mystery story featuring archaeologists, British agents, and a plucky English girl, but that just means one is learning while being entertained. One wishes that the narration were quite as good as the far-fetched but engaging plot. The difficulty is not the narration per se, which Emilia Fox reads beautifully. She also supplies an appealing, believable voice for Victoria, the ~censored~ heroine. It's most of the (many) male characters that give difficulty, for in seeking to give each a unique character-driven voice, Fox often makes them sound squeaky. As a result, many of the male characters have higher pitched voices than the female characters. This distracts from an otherwise admirable reading of a delightful entertainment.

The Clocks by agatha christie
Book Description

Listeners are in the hands of a pro with reader Robin Bailey, who effortlessly draws them into the Christie's fictional microcosm. Dame Agatha has the uncanny knack of creating a perfectly rendered and self-contained little world with exquisite details, from the color of an office girl's shoes to the art on a suspect's walls. To be so completely transported is a rare thing and is brought off beautifully by Bailey, who, like so many British actors, is a consummate professional, able to endow characters with their own quirks and nuances. When a dead man turns up on the floor of a blind woman's apartment surrounded by clocks all set to read 4:13, Special Branch Investigator Colin Lamb consults his old friend Hercule Poirot to unravel this clever puzzle. The intricate works of an Agatha Christie story are an immense pleasure, especially when delivered in so satisfying a narration.

The Tuesday Club by Murders by agatha christie
Book description

What a little gem! Each member at a Tuesday night get-together tells a tale of mystery, preferably one he or she has personal knowledge of, and the rest of the crowd tries to figure out the solution. As Miss Marple is among them, looking harmless with her knitting, the rest hardly stand a chance. . . . We the lucky listeners also get to puzzle out these 13 stories. Fortunately, the ever observant Miss Marple is there to help. Joan Hickson is the best of the Miss Marples. After playing her on stage, as well as in the BBC adaptations, she gives a sterling performance and vividly brings the modest yet razor-sharp Jane Marple to life.

The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd by agatha christie
Book Description

This novel, written in 1927, is considered the best and most successful of the early mysteries. It met with no small outrage when it appeared, as it uses a plot device many readers thought "unfair." There is a full complement of characters populating the cozy English village of King's Abbot: Major Blunt, Colonel Carter, Miss Gannett, the butler, the housekeeper, the narrator, Dr. Sheppard, and his know-it-all sister (the precursor of Miss Marple, according to Christie), and, of course, the redoubtable Hercule Poirot and his little grey cells. There are clues with a capital C to mislead us, and the listener gets so involved with these red herrings (or not) that the very simple truth eludes the puzzler. Venerable reader Robin Bailey keeps the light, almost comic tone alive, although his voices are not particularly differentiated, and often he rushes the reading of dialog. A classic of the genre and essential for any fiction collection.

The Labours of Hercules by agatha christie
book description

Hercule Poirot attempts to read about the Greek heroes, only to be bored witless. Then he hits upon a plan: Why not compare himself with the mighty Hercules and correspondingly begin his own 12 labors? So we have this fun series of 12 short mysteries. Hugh Fraser is an old hand at the Christie stories, and it's a pleasure to turn oneself over to this capable and talented actor. Fraser is able to paint a blustering dandy at once overblown and loveable. He is a master at creating little moments of humor with just a stutter or hesitation--his timing is perfection. He presents an Hercule who is our old friend and whom we are always happy to invite back into our lives.

The hollow by agatha christie
Book Description

Hercule Poirot was invited to the Hollow to tea, but found a murder waiting for him instead.
The victiman extraordinarily vital, emotionally complex doctorwas the last person anyone expected to see lying dead by the pool. And his meek, befuddled wife was the last person anyone would expect to see standing over him with a gun. Did she really shoot her husband? Or is she merely a second victim in a brilliantly planned plot by a daring, cunning murderer?
To find the answers, Poirot delves deep into the character of the victim and those in his sphere, sorting through colorful personalities and tangled emotions. But in doing so, he finds himself thwarted by a person who he calls "one of the best antagonists that I have ever had."

Taken at the Flood by agatha christie
Book description

The celebrated Belgian sleuth visits the sleepy English village of Warmsley Vale to check into the background of Gordon Cloade, supposedly a victim of the London Blitz. He had wed an attractive young widow, the former Mrs. Underhay, now the sole possessor of the Cloade family fortune. The deceased's sister-in-law told Poirot that "spirits" informed her that the widow's first husband is still among the living, raising suspicions about Cloade's demise. Fraser's tone at once reassures listeners that, just as on television, they are in capable hands. He does a fine job creating a variety of character voices, distinguishing one from another with clarity but without excessive flamboyance. The release of any Christie is an event, and it does not taken an abundance of "little gray cells" to deduce that this audio will be well-received

Sad Cypress by agatha christie
Book description

A charming, classic English country house mystery is brought to life in this radio dramatization. Hercule Poirot investigates the poisoning of a young woman following the death of a wealthy widow. Poirot is given a charming, astute characterization without overdoing it. The full cast of actors and complete sound track vividly create scenes, adding dimension a single narrator cannot. Gossipy whispering among servants, musical bridges and quick scene changes to advance the plot effectively build suspense and suspicion. This performance leaves the listener hoping Bantam will present more of Christie's tales--many well suited to the audio format.

Postern of Fate by agatha christie
Book Description

When we first meet detectives Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley, it's just after WWI, and they're hiring themselves out as "young adventurers." Their first case, finding the mysterious Jane Finn, is classic Christie with its twists, turns, and a final surprise. In POSTERN OF FATE, we meet Tommy and Tuppence much later (they're now married) as they uncover an old mystery in the home they've selected for their retirement. Samatha Bond, whose voice will be familiar to those who enjoy British television mysteries featuring Inspector Morse and Hercule Poirot, does a top-notch job with these stories. Her pacing is perfect, and her ability to switch from American to British to Russian-inflected accents astonishing. Bond's enthusiastic reading allows listeners to suspend their disbelief over Christie's more amazing plot twists and enjoy her stories for what they are: the foundation of the modern mystery.

Poirot's Early Cases by agatha christie
Book Description

These 18 cases were first gathered together in 1974, but they represent the early portion of Agatha Christie's career, as well as Poirot's. David Suchet and Hugh Fraser, who played Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and friend Captain Hastings on TV, do the voice work here. Since they don't switch off within any of the stories, but each does all the voices in a given story, that leaves both Suchet and Fraser doing a more exaggerated voice for Poirot, since Hastings actually does most of the narration in the stories. Otherwise, the reading is excellent, and the more interesting cases offer insights into Poirot's heart as he makes moral choices regarding his findings.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

A brutal murder and an unexpected blizzard bring in the vacationing Hercule Poirot. The results are excellent. This BBC Radio dramatization is as thought-provoking as the original. The vocal characterizations, as diverse as the characters themselves, are appropriately dramatic. Actor John Moffatt is a forceful Poirot and leads the ensemble with style. Elephants Can Remember by Agatha Christie

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Did General Ravenscroft kill Lady Ravenscroft or was she the one holding the gun? Many years later their daughter would like to know, so her godmother, Ariadne Oliver, asks Hercule Poirot to investigate. Working in tandem, Mrs. Oliver and Poirot identify and interview an ever-increasing list of witnesses (the elephants of the title). Poirot painstakingly reconstructs long-vanished relationships, and his deductions eventually lead him to one final witness. Even the great Christie recycled concepts from time to time; this mystery is one of several "remembered death" titles, characterized by long, descriptive conversations that can be tedious. In this case the contrast between Poirot's severe, analytical style and that of the charming but erratic Mrs. Oliver adds life to what would otherwise be a rather dull tale. John Moffatt delivers the competent if unexciting reading one expects from this producer. Christie at her worst (which this is not) is still better than most mystery writers.

N or M by Agatha Christie

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Middle-aged Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, too old to fight and too young to knit, are dismayed to find out that the British government of World War II has little interest in their detecting and spy-catching abilities. Then, almost incidentally, they are asked to spot a traitor, believed to be living at a rural guesthouse. But the place is full of harmless eccentrics: elderly ladies, retired military men, a hypochondriac and his colorless wife, a young mother, and a German refugee. The Beresfords invent personalities and elaborate traps, identify the imposter, and prevent an invasion. The strengths of this Christie "cozy" are the exuberant charm, intelligence, and enthusiasms of the central characters. Middle-aged they may be, but inside Tommy and Tuppence are still the same young adventurers who chased criminals and spies in post-Great War London.

Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Poirot's little gray cells are activated when he receives a letter from an elderly woman concerned about her safety--two months after her death. Soon he and Hastings visit Little Green House and meet the late Miss Arundell's multiple relatives, all of whom had opportunity and motive to benefit from her death. Narrator Hugh Fraser, who plays Poirot's assistant on A&E and PBS, is exceptional as Hastings, Poirot, and the huge cast of suspects. The spoiled niece and nephew; desperate Bella; the maligned Greek doctor; the companion, Miss Lawson; and last but not least, the dog, Bob, whose internal monologues add to the intrigue and fun, are all perfectly portrayed.

Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie
BOOK DESCRIPTION

A French woman dies in mid-air on a plane crossing the English Channel. A poison dart indicates murder. That she was notably ugly provides a clue, albeit a cryptic one. Fortunately for justice, the famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot happens to be aboard. In fact, evidence points to him as the perpetrator. This short BBC Radio 4 dramatization is thoroughly professional and a lot of fun. Further, it has the welcome "house sound" of the Beeb's radio plays--pristine, lightly layered, and clear. Fussy listeners may grumble that the production is a bit bland compared to Dame Agatha's original, but overall this gets high marks for enjoyment.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
BOOK DESCRIPTION

Ten strangers are invited to an island by the mysterious U.N. Owen. All are accused of murder and slowly, inexorably, the nursery rhyme comes to fruition, and they begin to die, until there are none. Here's Agatha Christie at her best with her classic drawing room murder mystery, with extra tension to boot. David Horovitch acts out all the parts, quietly communicating the hints and nuances of Christie's well-known tale. As each character claims innocence, Horovitch adds a touch of cynicism to voice and story. Yet the mysterious murderer remains unknown until the very last syllable is uttered.

Dead Man's Folly by Agatha Christie

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Even Hercule Poirot is nearly stumped this time. A famous crime fiction writer and friend invites Poirot to attend a murder hunt she's devised to entertain attendees of a fete at a country estate. Wouldn't you know it, the faux victim really does end up dead. The rest of the book is a chance to get to know the guests and suss out possible motives. Christie is the absolute best at creating an England that may never have existed except in our imaginations: garden parties, fancy dress, and roses in bloom. No one presents this varied cast of characters like David Suchet. Suchet may well be one of the best stars working in audio recording today. No one can excel him in making a character come alive as a distinct individual. Little pauses, stutters, lisps, background edginess, or a sense of humor lilts through to craft each person like a little painting and make him and her much more distinct than a mere accent would. David Suchet is a class act and a fine artist.

Cat Among The Pigeons by agatha christie

Book Description

A revolution in the Middle East has a direct and deadly impact upon the summer term at Meadowbank, a picture-perfect girls' school in the English countryside. Prince Ali Yusuf, Hereditary Sheikh of Ramat, whose great liberalizing experiment-'hospitals, schools, a Health Service'-is coming to chaos, knows that he must prepare for the day of his exile. He asks his pilot and school friend, Bob Rawlinson, to care for a packet of jewels. Rawlinson does so, hiding them among the possessions of his niece, Jennifer Sutcliffe, who is bound for Meadowbank. Rawlinson is killed before he can reveal the hiding place-or even the fact that he has employed his niece as a smuggler. But someone knows, or suspects, that Jennifer has the jewels. As murder strikes Meadowbank, only Hercule Poirot can restore the peace.

Black Coffee by Agatha Christie
Book Description

Subtitled A Hercule Poirot Novel, Black Coffee is actually an Agatha Christie play recrafted as a book meant to be read rather than seen on the stage. The story was first produced in 1930, and Charles Osborne has done little to it except string the dialogue and stage directions together in paragraph form. Christie loyalists will welcome and applaud his dedication to the original, but it does seem as though he could have given it a bit more flair. Still, Poirot himself, bumbling Captain Hastings, and obsequious George are all in good form and it is amusing to find them engaged in another adventure, with an interesting assortment of possible murderers, blackmailers, and innocent (if suspicious) bystanders.

The novel opens as Poirot receives a summons at his breakfast table from England's premier physicist, Sir Claud Amory. Busy working on a new formula necessary for England's defense in the Second World War, Amory suspects a member of his household of espionage. Of course, by the time Poirot and sidekick Hastings arrive at the scientist's country house, he is suddenly and mysteriously dead. Amory himself turns out to have been not quite nice, and his family, regardless of his scientific efforts, is pretty pleased with the new state of affairs. Still, Poirot manages both to save the more amiable members of the household from themselves and to protect the secrets of the British Empire. The novel is warmly evocative of another time and place and a welcome reminder of vintage Christie.

Murder at the Vicarage

The murder of Colonel Protheroe -- shot through the head -- is a shock to everyone in St Mary Mead, though hardly an unpleasant one. Now even the vicar, who had declared that killing the detested Protheroe would be 'doing the world at large a favour,' is a suspect -- the Colonel has been dispatched in the clergyman's study, no less. But the picturesque English village of St Mary Mead is overpopulated with suspects. There is of course the faithless Mrs Protheroe; and there is of course her young lover -- an artist, to boot.

Perhaps more surprising than the revelation of the murderer is the detective who will crack the case: 'a white-haired old lady with a gentle, appealing manner.' Miss Jane Marple has arrived on the scene, and crime literature's private men's club of great detectives will never be the same.

Curtain
by Agatha Christie

"Nothing is so sad, in my opinion," muses Captain Hastings, "as the devastation wrought by age." In this final outing for the inimitable Hercule Poirot and his loyal friend Arthur Hastings, the body may be weak but Poirot's brain is still functioning magnificently. A murder will be committed, the famous detective tells his friend, and Hastings must function as Poirot's legs. Aging and failing in health, the once energetic Poirot is now confined to a wheelchair. However, that does not stop the two friends from once again going on the hunt together in a case Poirot himself tells Hastings will be his last case but his most interesting one. As a special bonus for Poirot fans, we return once again to Styles, the scene of Poirot's first adventure. A near-death of one woman followed by the actual death of another, a sadist who is able to convince others to murder, a most surprising act by Hastings himself, a peep through a keyhole, a visit to a faithful valet, and murder most symmetrical are clues that lead to the uncovering of the criminal Poirot has come to Styles to unmask. Surely, this must rank as one of Christie's finest as we bid a fond adieu to Hercule Poirot. We shall not hunt together again, my friend.

Dead Man's Mirror
by Agatha Christie

Code:
[i]Info: The famous detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to the country home of Sir Gervase Chevenix-Gore, but when he arrives, his host is found dead in his study, apparently of suicide. This short selection proves again that Agatha Christie is a master of plot and conversation, in particular the art of interrogation, as demonstrated by the perceptive Hercule Poirot. Hugh Fraser's clear and eloquent British accent bends and lifts to suit both the character and rhythm of this mystery. He successfully portrays a full cast of characters, mastering the difficult nuances of arrogance and self-importance of one and the twittering of another, and moves seamlessly among them.[/i]
