Nikki Sixx's problems with substance abuse are well chronicled. He nearly died back in the '80s and his band Motley Crue's wild lifestyle was detailed in the book The Dirt. Sixx has written a book called The Heroin Diaries, which takes excerpts from his diaries during the deepest and darkest depths of his addiction along with recollections from friends, family and bandmates. After the book was written, Sixx started jamming with some friends and the songs began coming out. When they were done there was a new band called Sixx A.M. and a soundtrack for the book.

The other members of Sixx A.M. are vocalist James Michael and guitarist D.J. Ashba. The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack has a song for each chapter of the book which is inspired by or corresponds with the subject matter in the book. Michael has been a longtime producer and writer who has worked with tons of artists including Alanis Morissette, Saliva and The Scorpions. He does a nice job going from behind the scenes to fronting a band. His voice doesn't have a huge range, but it is very expressive and dynamic.

Ashba is a skilled guitarist, who is able to infuse a raw punk edge on some songs, but also play slow, acoustic ballads. The three members of the band all wrote and produced the songs, and they have really good chemistry for a brand new entity.

This is a very eclectic album that has some songs you probably wouldn't expect from a guy who is in Motley Crue. There are plenty of hard rock tracks that are very melodic and catchy, including "Life Is Beautiful," which is one of the highlights, but also mellow ballads and songs that are epic and orchestral. Sixx provides narration throughout the album with short passages from the book, which really ties everything together.

The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack is full of ups and downs, just like the story it portrays. There are a variety of emotions, from dark and angry to uplifting and hopeful. It's an extremely engaging album, both musically and lyrically.
........
