Considered way ahead of its time, R&B trio Intro put out a self-titled album in 1993. By all acounts, Intro should have been on its way to the top of R&B, but that never happened. With a beautiful cover of Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon in the Sky", the sexy but not nasty "Come Inside" and the radio hit "Let Me Be the One", "Intro" could safely be called a classic of its genre. |

A pair of brother acts combined forces to form Jodeci, a singing group with one foot in the future and the other squarely in the past. Dalvin and Devante Swing DeGrate teamed with JoJo and K-Ci Hailey for a debut album that mixed vintage soul singing with new jack production and bravado. But it wasn't the hip-hop-flavored songs that earned them popularity; instead, urban contemporary audiences embraced the love tunes "Come and Talk to Me" and the title track, signaling the beginnings of a move away from new jack swing that became a full-fledged retreat. |

The album's then-nearly unique blend of hip hop and soul have made it a pivotal album in the development, and perhaps the very first example of, hip hop soul. The album was an unexpected crossover success at a time when soul albums were unpopular as hip hop and grunge music dominated the charts; its success was buoyed by early chart success for "You Remind Me" and "Real Love".
What's the 411? peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and topped the Top Hip Hop/R&B Albums chart. "You Remind Me" and What's the 411? were certified gold by the RIAA in August and September of 1992, respectively. One month later, What's the 411? was certified platinum and a month after that, "Real Love" was certified gold. In February of 1993, What's the 411? was certified double platinum but sales would soon reach that of triple platinum status. |
