This idea-rich, relentlessly upbeat manual proffers graphic images as an aid to unlock creative thinking or clarify emotions. Drawing loosely on brain research, learning theory and information science, English business consultant/TV personality Tony Buzan (Use Both Sides of Your Brain) and his brother Barry, a professor of international studies, first outline "radiant thinking," a method designed to enhance one's associative, nonlinear thought processes. Next they explain how to create "mind maps"-colorful, structured, drawings, cartoonish or complex-as a tool to overcome mental blocks, organize ideas, brainstorm, strengthen one's memory and imagination, and make meetings more productive. Despite its inflated claims and cluttered presentation, this unusual how-to, replete with exercises, quizzes, dramatic color photos of patterns in nature, and sample mind maps, will challenge and stimulate the open-minded. |

The above rating is given in the context of revising for exams, although no doubt the books application is much wider. In summary the techniques - namely mindmaps - held within revolutionised the way I thought about studying for exams. On the basis of a ratio of time spent absobing the books content compared to benefit derived this book is without doubt the best I have ever read. The importance of learning how to learn as opposed to learing any specific body of knowledge can not be stressed enough. The stories of miraculous transformations from middle of the road students to Oxbridge candidates are not merely sales ploys, I firmly believe they occur. In my case I achieved average grades at GCSE before reading this text on the advice of one of my A Level teachers. I could not believe the transformation in efficeincy in terms of my revision techniques. I subsequently achieved four A grades at A Level and secured a place at one of the country's best universities. I have recommended the book to numerous friends and invariably their responses have matched my own. This said I do know a few who didn't rate the book, although i've no idea why not. If you buy one book this year with the intention of passing a set of exams make sure this is it - obviously if it's available! |

Dominic O'Brien developed his own system which uses (famous) people linked with numerals from 0-99. Foe example, he uses the digit 00 - as Olive Oyle, popeyes girlfriend. It is clever as it is different from the phonetic system which Buzan, Lorrayne and the like developed. He then links them together using the Loci system; a different location with a different person etc. If you a familiar with the phonetic system i.e 1 = t,d; 2 = n etc why change? Every memory improvement book uses word association and imagery and this book is no exception. Both need to be developed and practiced. It doesn't take one or two lessons to learn to play the piano, so why should memory improvement be any different? |

Chapters are each designed to exercise a different kind of brain activity, with a series of newly compiled exercises, puzzles and tests.

Ken Russell and Philip Carter are MENSA Puzzle Editors and have compiled nearly 100 books on all aspects of testing, puzzles and crosswords.
* A hints section is provided for the more difficult tests and puzzles.
* Answers together with detailed explanations, where necessary, are provided for all puzzles and tests.
* A guide to assessing performance is provided for each of the IQ tests in the Intelligence Test section, and for tests in other sections where appropriate.

Why do fools fall in love? Why does a man's annual salary, on average, increase $600 with each inch of his height? When a crack dealer guns down a rival, how is he just like Alexander Hamilton, whose face is on the ten-dollar bill? How do optical illusions function as windows on the human soul? Cheerful, cheeky, occasionally outrageous MIT psychologist Steven Pinker answers all of the above and more in his marvelously fun, awesomely informative survey of modern brain science. Pinker argues that Darwin plus canny computer programs are the key to understanding ourselves--but he also throws in apt references to Star Trek, Star Wars, The Far Side, history, literature, W. C. Fields, Mozart, Marilyn Monroe, surrealism, experimental psychology, and Moulay Ismail the Bloodthirsty and his 888 children. If How the Mind Works were a rock show, tickets would be scalped for $100. This book deserved its spot as Number One on bestseller lists. It belongs on a short shelf alongside such classics as Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life, by Daniel C. Dennett, and The Moral Animal: Why We Are the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology, by Robert Wright. Pinker's startling ideas pop out as dramatically as those hidden pictures in a Magic Eye 3D stereogram poster, which he also explains in brilliantly lucid prose. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. |

Starting with the deliberately ambiguous title, what you get in this book is pure Bandler. Not surprising, really, since the text is an edited version of several seminars Bandler conducted in 1982.
It seems to me that you can treat the book as an educational exercise, or as an interactive experience. Indeed, the editing is so effective that I could imagine myself strolling through town letting Bandler show me the world through his eyes, listen to it with his ears, and so on. And a mightily enjoyable experience it was.
At the surface level the book covers topics such as submodalities, learning, the "swish" pattern, etc. - keeping in mind how much of our experience is objective, and how much is subjective. Better yet, having pointed out that the majority of our experience subjective - it goes on to explain how we can radically change our lives for the better by "reprogramming" the bits we don't like.
Personally I found this to be an excellent book on the subject, with plenty of amusing and relevant cartoons by Gustav Russ Youngreen, and practical exercises and demonstrations throughout.
With regard to the difficulties mentioned by other reviewers, I would say that there are plenty of guys doing what Abby describes who wouldn't know NLP from a hole in the ground.
It is also worth pointing out that NLP is, after all, just another tool. And like any other tool, *some* people are bound to misuse it.
As for whether you can become proficient in NLP just by attending one or two trainings and reading some books, I agree - you can't.
And if you tell yourself that you don't understand, then you won't (that, too, is "reprogramming"!)
Like any other subject, you will only "learn" NLP when you "do" it. So anyone who thinks that reading this book, or any other, will make them into a master communicator overnight would probably be better off saving their money.
For readers who take the book in the spirit in which it was written, on the other hand, I'd guess you may find this a very enjoyable and beneficial addition to your bookshelf. |

Hi, I am a sophomore student at Rutgers and I volunteer at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. I have the opportunity to interact with Senior citizens who are troubled by their memory loss. There is also their added worry that they would be a burden to their family. This awareness rekindled my interest in memory and ways to improve it. I found the memory program to be very informative. It's author, Dr.Devanand has used his clinical knowledge, skills and experience to put this book in an orderly manner so that it is easy for the general public to get the information they need without getting lost. It spells out the causes, methods of prevention and treatment in a straightforward style. Dr. Devanand also has a holistic approach towards the program where he stresses the value of a healthy life style combining good nutrition and exercise . This is an easy to follow MANUAL - with plans tailored to individual needs, which should be in every house and everyone should "get with the program |

This book promises many things, from utilizing simple visualization and mnemonics to doing more controversial and admittedly miraculous things, such as seeing without your eyes.
Upon skimming the book, it seems quite daunting as to how much is effective and where to start. I found it quite interesting that Mr. Saunders often makes historical refrences [As in Exersise 98: Body Temperature Control] to compound on his theories and exercises.
Several skeptics maintain that many of the things proposed in this book are in fact ineffective and simply made-up, but others often support the idea that we don't truly know the limits of our natural capabilities, or that we are capable of miraculous things.
I would like to also stress that what works for one person doesn't always work for everyone. Many people often practice an exercise for a short period of time and quickly become jaded with the work after it producing little or no apparent or immediate results. I feel that I must stress that little effort often results in little gain, and that perserverance is a key trait to have when learning any new skill.
If you're willing to go out on a limb and try something different then this is the course for you. This book isn't for [or, I believe, intended for] the close-minded or for those simply seeking a magic bullet. |

The introduction to Discover Your Genius shows off the double meaning of the book's title in plain language: it is meant to help you find both your own potential for greatness and a meaningful role model to provide focus. In an effort to lead you to both simultaneously, Michael J. Gelb has created a combination workbook, guided journal, and historical biography of 10 outstanding humans.
Arranged chronologically, Discover Your Genius begins with Plato and ends with Einstein, meeting up with Brunelleschi, Columbus, Copernicus, Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Jefferson, Darwin, and Ghandi in between. Each chapter highlights a few specific achievements while analyzing the methods and motivations of the geniuses in question.
Accompanying exercises encourage you to talk with friends, create lists and goals, seek additional reading and musical selections, and uncover your dreams. From designing a personal coat of arms filled with meaningful symbols to developing the habit of taking regular walks, these exercises balance quickly achievable activities with ongoing life changes. Several chapters urge you to involve your friends, with evenings of special, themed dinners, like the toga party with Symposium Lamb Delight, gallons of wine, and recitations of personal "odes to love."
What you'll get out of all this is dependent on your own individual views of history and politics, but keep in mind it's hard to find a truly great figure who is not controversial. If you are able to overlook the inherent hypocrisy in, for example, Thomas Jefferson (slave owner) as bastion of personal freedom, and the great explorers' (Columbus) direct responsibility for a number of known atrocities, you'll find plenty to ponder and enjoy. |
