History Channel Lost Evidence Luzon Military WWII
TV : Documentary : Other quality : English
On 9th January 1945, General Douglas MacArthur led an American Army back to Luzon in the heart of the Philippines. The islands had fallen into Japan’s hands following a surprise attack launched in December 1941. Defending US and Philippine forces were forced to withdraw to the sweltering jungles of the Bataan Peninsula, and to the island of Corregidor. The beleaguered defenders finally surrendered between April and May 1942, whereupon 80,000 US and Philippine soldiers became Japanese Prisoners of War.
These men then embarked upon the horrific ‘Bataan Death March’ – a forced 105 kilometre northward journey towards the Cabanatuan camp. In the course of this infamous procession of death, more than 11,000 of them would perish. On President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s orders, MacArthur withdrew to Australia, where he made the now famous ‘I came out of Bataan and I shall return’ speech.
When he fulfilled this pledge at the beginning of 1945, Macarthur’s forces faced a quarter of a million Japanese troops. The campaign that followed was like no other battle of the Pacific War. The bitter and prolonged fight spanned jungles, paddy fields, mountain fortresses and a major city.
This programme offers an extraordinary insight into this climactic battle. Aerial photographs from countless reconnaissance missions have been combined with cutting edge computer graphics to create three dimensional models of Luzon’s major battlefields. Now it is possible to follow the men of MacArthur’s army on the race to liberate the island.
