By March 1945, the Rhine River stood as the only remaining obstacle between the Allies and the road to final victory over Nazi Germany. From Roman times, this formidable natural barrier had provided the Germans with a barricade against invaders from the West. This documentary tells the remarkable story of the ninety Allied divisions of men and machines who crossed the Rhine. We outline the grim resistance offered by Hitler’s armies, looking at the immense and tragic human cost of the battle.
On 7th March 1945, at the town of Remagen, American soldiers had discovered, with considerable amazement, that a bridge across the Rhine was still intact. The men of the Ninth Armoured Division realised that they had been dealt an incredibly lucky card - German attempts to blow the bridge in the face of the advancing troops had failed. The heroes of Remagen successfully crossed the bridge, and entered the history books as the first Allied soldiers to cross the Rhine.
Over the next few weeks, the massive and formidable Allied war machine launched coordinated attacks along a 450 mile front. On 24th March 1945, the largest air and sea operation since D-Day was launched against the German defences. An enormous airborne strike force, which was codenamed Operation Varsity, landed by parachute and glider on German soil. The defenders of the Reich made the paratroopers pay with their lives - it turned out to be the bloodiest day for Allied Airborne troops in the whole of the Second World War.
In order to make this groundbreaking documentary, aerial reconnaissance photographs taken at the time have been layered over a three dimensional map to create a computer generated ‘model’ of the battle to cross the River Rhine. For over sixty years, these photographs had remained lost, or forgotten.
For the first time these original high-resolution images enable us to track the battle, step by step, from the air. Individual stories of courage and heroism can be placed in the exact location where they took place. Using cutting edge technology, unique archive film, vivid re-enactments and extraordinary interviews with the men who crossed this mighty river, we offer a unique insight into the fight to cross the last barrier into the heart of Germany.
