Osborne Cox, (JOHN MALKOVICH), an analyst for the CIA, is abruptly dismissed from his job because he has a drinking problem. Bitterly accusing his former employers of a political crucifixion, Ossie plans to write a tell-all book about the Agency.
Meanwhile he�s unaware that his wife, Katie, (TILDA SWINTON), is secretly having an affair with Harry Pfarrer, a feckless Federal Marshal.
In another part of the city, Linda Litzke, (FRANCES McDORMAND), an employee of a fitness centres called Hard Bodies, is too concerned about the way she looks to realise that her boss, Ted, Richard Jenkins, fancies her.
When another colleague, dim-witted Chad, Brad Pitt, gets his hands on a disk with what seems like state secrets belonging to Ossie, they decide to blackmail him.
The Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan, have always divided their work between comedies and thrillers, but the thrillers have always had comic elements and the comedies thriller elements.
They�ve followed the masterly NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN with this very enjoyable, tart and witty comedy set in a Washington where political insiders and outsiders alike behave very badly indeed.
Right from the start, with JOHN MALKOVICH, superb as the heartily unpleasant Ossie, reacting with titanic fury to being fired, the film is utterly engaging and, as with every Coen Brothers film, the acting is marvellous down to the smallest, most insignificant role.
BURN AFTER READING is made with the absolute assurance of filmmakers who know exactly what they�re doing.
It�s briskly paced, full of intriguing twists and turns, and, unlike the majority of American films today, it�s really intelligent. Great fun, in fact. |
